My family have been doing as much of a blanket boycott of American products as we can, but I was wondering if there are any worth keeping around.

Does anybody know of any American companies that have recently reinforced DEI measures and / or taken a stance against the current government?

There’s an Urdu name for a “Jack of all trades” that translates to “every talent Lord.” A Korean version is “eight direction beauty.” But my favourite name for someone who tries their hand at lots of different things is the Lithuanian Barbė devyndarbė. It means “Barbie nine jobs”

a good part of me thinks that in addition to everything else, the reason they are scrubbing these stories is they do not want disadvantaged kids to believe they can aspire to anything other than their designated “black” or “hispanic” or “woman” job

i think people who complain about the language police are, by and large, just cowards. say whatever you want! no one is going to stop you. but people may judge you or even, if you say the wrong thing in front of the wrong person, pop you in the mouth. but that’s life!

What albums are y'all listening to at the moment? I need to wrench my hyperfixated brain away from the one I've had on repeat since New Years'.

The more authors you read, the less chance one of them becomes load-bearing. Any one author could crumble away and you're fine, you can point to a dozen others who are doing the same thing.

Even if it's an author like Terry Pratchett, spreading that parasociality out is never gonna be a bad thing

just totted up all the substacks I pay for and found myself thinking ‘wow wouldn’t it be better if all these writers were in one place and I could just pay a flat fee’ so anyway that’s how today I invented the concept of the ‘newspaper’

I'm pretty sure being on here and following a bunch of writerly, scholarly, bookish and generally creative types has helped – but I've been getting back into reading in a big way recently, especially as a replacement for doomscrolling. It's been really lovely! 🥺💜

My incredible dog, Clover, was attacked by another dog last night while out on a walk.

We had to take her to the emergency room for sutures and other care.

She's in recovery, but we have an unexpected bill now.

So I'm running a quick sale. Please share this!

not saying I'm feeling especially lazy today but I briefly - very briefly! - considered buying a copy of my own ebook while in the living room because the physical copies I keep at home are upstairs in my bedroom and that just felt like too much effort
