A federal judge in Wyoming received a motion citing nine cases. Of the nine, eight don't exist.

When she demanded an explanation, the lawyers said their "artificial intelligence platform ‘hallucinated’ the cases in question."

The impossibility of automating ambiguity (Birhane 2021)
Human creativity is marked by imagination and thinking of things that were not thought of before. Creative innovations that have come to define and revolutionize the world, from music to medicine, are often marked by surprise, spontaneity, and uncertainty. Creativity, Juarrero (2000) reminds us, stands in stark opposition to certainty and predictability. It requires unexpected and spontaneous behaviour and not repeating past patterns and trajectories. Creativity, by definition, defies expectation.4 As ML systems attempt to order the spontaneous and non-determinable social world, they create a future that resembles the past leaving us no room for a chance to be different. Such classifications and predictions reinforce stereotypes and impinge on the inherently open-endedness of being, limiting a personʼs potential by defining them by what people like them have done or liked or how people like them have behaved in the past. When future behaviours are predicted based on past stereotypes, individuals are deprived of the opportunity to challenge stereotypes and to realize their full potential.

I made a Doom source port that runs within a PDF file.

PDFs support Javascript, so Emscripten is used to compile Doom to asm.js, which is then run within the PDF engine. Input/output is done by manipulating text input fields.

going on linkedin to witness end-stage capitalism as self-harm (do not recommend). i witness a rando ask where they can get a website logo. a formerly formative close friend who has drunk evil tech corp kool-aid says cheerily "you can use dalle/midjourney!" my brain cries OH WENDY... WHY?!. beneath THAT comment, at least five human designers trying to get hired. i talk to my therapist about this incident, she tells me i am normal to have feelings about it. i feel insane. my therapist asks why i didn't say anything or leave a comment. i say WHAT KINDA PSYCHO WOULD I LOOK LIKE?! OMG NO!!! you could say something. "what would you say?" a furious screed comes easily. anger: it always burns inside. when your precious servers lie in pieces, artists still have their bodies and minds. BUTLERIAN JIHAND NOW! i bite out posts about tech bro parasitism. i think vicious, ugly things. every industry person knows how hard the business side of publishing is. how much is out of your control. money, publicity, sales... you gotta find a memory, a feeling, that keeps you going. i gave my whole heart to making stories with you. i am the idiot who decided that love was worth trying to make a career, a life off of. because you inspired me so much. and those memories are still my north star.

I don’t think it can be emphasized enough that large language models were never intended to do math or know facts; literally all they do is attempt to sound like the text they’re given, which may or may not include math or facts. They don’t do logic or fact checking — they’re just not built for that

Making comparisons between complex things can be a helpful tool for understanding them - I think that people sometimes mistake having a useful surface-level analogy for having a deep understanding of how complex systems work.

The unspoken assumption behind AI use cases like this is that other people aren't actually Real in the way the AI enthusiast is - so it's fine to waste their time with a chatbot. Other people can buy the deadly AI-generated mushroom-hunting book because the only thing real about them is their money.

We’re pushing the envelope every day.” What does he have in mind? “You could send your avatar to join meetings on your behalf, with all your knowledge and all your perspectives.” Not a cartoon avatar but, like Digital Marilyn, one that looks and sounds exactly like you. Mr. Liang figures Otter has transcribed thousands of his own meetings. With all that information, it can train a model to have the avatar respond to many repeated common questions. “My avatar could answer probably 95% of those questions on its own. And with synthesized speech”—technology that already exists—“it sounds exactly like me.” A watermark would help avoid deepfake fraud. Meetings will never be the same.
