✨Thoughts on game dev, leadership & the pastries of Sweden✨

Hey! I'm Gen 👋
I'm the Studio Art Director at DICE and a gamedev veteran of over 20 years.

I'm passionate about game development & creative leadership and like to post thoughts and advice on those topics occasionally. I'm also a house goblin, common nerd and like to write about anything really ✨
Nearing the end of Deus Ex Mankind Divided

1. Campaign is a bit short but that's on me I suppose. I love long meaningful campaigns.

2. Deeply annoyed at the fact that all the main characters with agency and clout are men. Women are stuck in nurturing or victim roles. What gives??

I just finished my self-assessment for the yearly review and according to Word I've reached 2173 words. Am I winning?

I have to go out to go to the supermarket but it also means I have to put pants on. I’m terribly vexed.

We have been musing on this recently. When you can buy an actually quite good (and fairly recent) Sonic the Hedgehog game for $0.50 on Steam, it does make you question the future of pricing overall in the industry

I really wish we were in a place where we could discuss the actual causes and solutions to the current games discourse.

Imo it feels that the price discussion is a trap to avoid the bigger picture. I know it’s a complex problem, but simplistic conclusions don’t get us anywhere.

I want a button that lets me skip back 5, 10, 15, 20 hours back in my timeline.

Whether it’s an awkward touch on the screen that resets my view, or the app crashing and rebooting, I always reach a point in my Sunday morning scroll where I lose my reading spot.

Let me skip back.

The amount of times I sit in a call with a dreamer and their dream game is basically "everything from my favorite six games smashed together into perfect harmony and there was endless flawless content and it has graphics everyone likes" and I have to explain that making feet go on stairs is hard
i think what a lot of people never seem to realize is that a lot of people's vision of an "epic dream game" isn't actually very deep and comes down to scale and/or having a lot of features, whereas by embracing limitations you can be pushed in a far more radical direction.
rpgmaker definitely isn't the right tool for everyone, but I think using opinionated pre-baked tools to make some games would be very instructive to a lot of folks setting out to make their epic custom dream game. they're a much lower-stakes way to learn important lessons like "how to tell a story"

Deus Ex Mankind Divided is making me realize I actually only don't stealth when it's not a Deus Ex game.

Walkin' around in sewers, as one does. Someone just insulted Adam Jensen and his trenchcoat, specifically. How dare.

Win11 continues to delight - my personal Office suite was just updated automatically to "Copilot". At least I could share my satisfaction through a survey that was attached to the update. Thanks, Microsoft.

Back on my bullshit and committing to the bit once again: I have bought fresh rennet. Soon I’ll be able to flip the fridge contents ratio to 100% cheese and butter.

What do you mean two thirds of my body is made of carbon fiber and the other third is made of hot-man-with-rock-hard-6-pack and yet I get one shot killed by puny pistol bullets. What a travesty.
This game is resentful of my actions and does not appreciate my rightful style (shooting people in the face).

I've been asked to talk at a panel about the "The Emotional Labour of Leadership" (in the games industry)

Panel Description: "Leaders discuss the invisible work of conflict management, reassurance, and emotional regulation in creative teams."

So yeah. I have thoughts. What are yours?

Their target isn’t creatives. It’s people that don’t have the urge to make and experiment with things, thus don’t know what it means to be creative or engage in creative crafts and find joy in it.

That’s where the money is, and where you can influence the tides.
"AI transforms how you think about idea generation" you mean thinking???? you mean using your brain to think of something?

I got the best gift this birthday season (date pending).

Someone told me a past colleague we have in common told them I was the best AD they ever worked with 😭🌈

I kinda need to print this here so I remember it, so here we go.

Yeah well I may not necessarily love picking up poop so I guess we're all gonna have to make some sacrifices.

Writing a serious short bio for oneself is _the worst_

What do you mean it needs to sound both formal and also interesting? What about cats and random jokes?
