I'm a librarian and created this account to share missing LGBTQ+ cultural heritage content on nps.gov (and elsewhere if I find it). I'm not an expert in digital archives, just a concerned queer trying to document attempts to erase our history.

DOGE has just completely gutted the IMLS, firing all staff, closing down their email addresses, and leaving any funding for 2025 in question.

The Institute for Museum and Library Services Was Just Gutted
DOGE fired all IMLS employees and closed down their emails. It is assumed all funding for 2025 coming from the federal agency will not be happening.

One thing to note about this Smithsonian executive order is that Trump can’t actually order the Smithsonian to do anything because the Smithsonian is not under the control of the executive. It’s a quasi-independent creature of Congress that is held in the public trust.
There is a level of nuance in this discussion that is probably not great for skeets, but…

I think there are two helpful analytical lenses with which to view the legal effect of executive orders:

The first is asking “for whom?” Understanding who an order binds and why is helpful.
i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

Confirmed DOGE is currently inside IMLS headquarters.
NEW — Keith Sonderling, Trump’s Deputy Secretary of Labor, has been named the Acting Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an agency source tells me. He’ll arrive tomorrow at their office with DOGE and their security detail.

Appears that more pages have been taken down since I did my deep dive a couple weeks ago. The NPS website is used by a wide variety of history professionals as well as the general public; the impacts of this censorship will be felt. www.npr.org/2025/03/05/n...

This is fantastic - @madycast.com is developing a bot to automate the discovery of LGBTQ+ censorship on federal websites.
Hi! This account will post links to webpages that are detected to have been censored of LGBTQ+ content.

The bot is currently under development, but please follow us for updates!

LGBTQ+ history webpages, mental health hotlines, and resources for the victims of CSAM and hate crimes are among the thousands of censored webpages identified by a custom tool I developed.

I hope to document all .gov LGBTQ+ erasure.

The Stonewall National Memorial page is not the only LGBTQ+ content on the National Park Service website impacted by censorship.

The following pages have gone missing since January 20, 2025. Some (many?) were still live as recently as yesterday (February 13). 🧵
