When I took the history reporter job, I told my editor I would never "both sides" the Civil War, Confederates or slavery. I never did.

Fmr R (left after the '19 con cycle) and now an I. We can't have good ideas without real political competition. Single-party states (Rs in TX and Ds in CA) don't allow ideas to get better. You have to have functioning parties and, ideally, some elected independents. Competition = better policy.
In Texas, longtime problem with the national Dem apparatus is that they did not massively fund or support state Dems.
