@ashleysloboda.bsky.social w/ the failed NACS ref, I'd love an explainer on funding/teacher pay after SB1.
NACS hasn't meaningfully boosted teach pay. 10-year MA teachers make ess. the same ($51k) as starting with a BA. This is not misinfo, it is a paystub. I hear "we need to pay teachers!" but...

The kids are alright. Not because of us, in spite of.
Three high schoolers founded a book club that reads some of the country's most frequently banned books after a state law removing books with sexual content was signed in 2023. Two years later, many of the books have been reshelved and parts of the law can't be enforced.

100% agree with this.
how much you connect with a book has as much to do with your station in life or mood or what you last ate as the book itself

Yeah, when it's good, it's really good. And it's only going to improve. The exploration of ideas becomes so much faster and easier the more and more these tools progress.
i’m less concerned about this now. i experienced deep flow vibecoding yesterday. in some ways it was actually deeper than manual coding because (when it worked well) i was able to explore ideas and directions that would normally take me days (due to lack of domain knowledge, boilerplate etc)
the thing i'm worried about is whether AI will decimate the "flow states" of knowledge work. i realize this is very selfish. i enjoy being in a flow state. i don't want to constantly be babysitting an unlearning intern who repeatedly violates instructions. even if they eventually produce good work

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

Would really like to see the NFL do something to make the onside kick viable again—like maybe back the receiving team up 5 more yards?

This obviously sucks, but one thing that gives me hope is that my favorite tech and culture publications of yore are doing Good Work. Keep it up @wired.com and @arstechnica.com.

A free and democratic society cannot silence comedians because the President doesn’t like what they say.
This is an attack on free speech and cannot be allowed to stand.
All elected officials need to speak up and push back on this undemocratic act.

As a board member of my local library, this is totally accurate and a problem for us too. We also had to reduce access to Hoopla.
Thanks for saying this, I said something similar. We love people using Hoopla but it does eat our budget and we had to reduce how many borrows people could get from it recently. Libby is cool, once we buy a copy we’ve got it just like a regular book.

My library system is begging people to check out books. The audio and ebooks are eating their budget alive. They have asked people to use books as much as possible. It will increase their budget while making it possible for reasonable negotiations between the library sys and epubs.

We're on to the Central Conference Semifinals after a magnificent come-from-behind victory, 3-2 over Midwest United FC, capped by the Amari Fowlkes overtime goal. We'll play 7 p.m. Sunday against either the Flint City Bucks or Steel City FC at Atwood Stadium in Flint, Michigan.
