Here's a Christmas Day recommendation for a Christmas-set movie that has basically nothing to do with Christmas: The Lion in Winter, a deeply ahistorical but very funny movie about Henry II trying to choose his successor. A big influence on Succession, and you can tell in how biting the dialogue is.

"I've talked to at least five couples who say: I get it. I think the way you do. I just don't want the controversy right now," related one mother. They are all eager for their story to be told - but not a single one would let me use their name. They worry about losing their jobs or hurting their children if their opposition to this ideology were known. Consider this story, from Chapin, the tony all-girls school on the Upper East Side, involving a white girl in the lower grades who came home one day and told her father: "All people with lighter skin don't like people with darker skin and are mean to them." He was horrified as she explained that that was what she had been taught by her teachers. "I said to her: that's not how we feel in this family." It's worth taking a look at Chapin's various affinity groups, which have become de rigueur at all of these schools. (Chapin did not respond to a request for comment.)

One wild thing that's probably not gotten enough attention this year is the administration refusing to let members of Congress inspect immigration detention facilities, a violation of the law. This story has some details on how that's played out. talkingpointsmemo.com/feature/how-...
Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) was mad. It was Dec. 8 and she was inside 26 Federal Plaza with Goldman and Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY). The congressional delegation was on the building’s fifth floor, which advocates say has played host to the majority of detentions in recent weeks, as immigrants are required to show up there for routine checkins. It’s a hard claim to verify; advocates, attorneys, and credentialed reporters have been barred from observing the activity on the floor. Now, the members of Congress were being shut out too. Velázquez fumed after she was turned away following a tense standoff that lasted several minutes. “I stayed there listening to some bullshit,” Velázquez said with a wave of her hand as she stormed off to the elevators. Guards from Paragon Systems, a private contractor that provides security at federal buildings around the country, had initially stopped the lawmakers at the elevators and prevented them from proceeding onto the floor. After they called in a DHS commander, the congressional delegation was taken down the hall, out of sight of their staff and of TPM. They returned after a short — and apparently unsatisfactory — exchange.
