DC always an extreme. That said, LIHTC never designed for efficiency. Was invented by Nixon GOP to replace HUD public housing & grant programs w/ RE tax shelter & private control. And it worked! Created distinct & complex industry of developers, operators, lawyers, accountants that all get to eat.

Hours-long wait times. Endless looping music. Useless robot messages. Millions of seniors and disabled people call Social Security every month.

What they experience is often maddening.
Callers to Social Security wait for hours to get help. Hear their ordeals.

Peeping #2 on the NYC ballot.

Looks good until you read the fine print. Charter revisions that reshape the tripartite nature of NYC’s governance should always be viewed with skepticism.

The affordable housing commitments have very little teeth for deep affordability.

The political segment traditionally responsible for upholding free speech, i.e. Liberals have abandoned their posts by remaining mute on Gaza and these university witch hunts. Its receding presence gives Conservatism an expanded reach to control the public discourse.
The irony of these “free speech” committees is that these will lead to something that the legislature has tried but failed to do for the past two sessions:

A statewide bounty system where students, or anyone for that matter, can report profs to the state who teach things they don’t like.
The committees were made to honor slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk and come as university faculty have come under online scrutiny.

Of course Donald Trump and Andrew Cuomo have “always gotten along”

Both men are serial sexual harassers driven by massive ego and the desire to weaponize literally anything for personal political gain.

This is disturbing and shameful.
It’s been 72 hours since federal agents abducted a legal permanent resident from our city and Andrew Cuomo still hasn’t said a word.

While the feds go after HUD spending, @mayorbowser.bsky.social is gutting tenant protections in DC. She won’t even commit to our access to justice initiative.

Apparently landlords bottom line matters more than tenants’ basic housing rights. This is why we need #socialhousing.

Black anti-fascists argued the Atlantic world’s history of racial violence belied the novelty of intra-European fascism. Speaking at the Second International Writers Congress in 1937, Langston Hughes declared: “We Negroes in America do not have to be told what fascism is in action. We know.”
The Long Shadow of Racial Fascism - Boston Review
A debate is roiling about the aptness of comparing Trump to European fascists. But radical Black thinkers have long argued that racial slavery created its own unique form of American fascism.
