Don't know who needs to hear this, but building courage is like building muscle.

Using it for small things and incrementally increasing amounts helps you when it comes time for the bigger stuff.

In the last interview of his life (1996), astronomer Carl Sagan gave an eerily prescient warning of the dangers that come when you cannot ask skeptical scientific questions of those in authority. Watch and ask yourself: was he right?

Seems like we’re having a “great new people should run for office” chat again. Awesome!

However:

I have yet to be convinced that “more scientists in office” is a better outcome for science than “people who are talented politicians who understand and value science and listen to their advisors.”

If students learn anything from a psychology class, it should be how to evaluate whether something is pseudoscience or not. Otherwise, people fall victim to scams ("use these magnets on your wrists to 'improve your energy flow'"). 3/6

You may have seen that the incoming NIH director and his buddies started a new journal, The Journal of the Academy of Public Health

(One clue: There is no recognized Academy of Public Health)

The Journal of the Academy of Public Health claims to open up scientific communication. But its unusual editorial policies have some scientists concerned

My childhood best friend passed away a few days ago. I don’t know how to deal with this kind of grief. She was so young, didn’t even finish uní. I feel like I’ve been floating aimlessly for the past few days ever since I found out. What do you mean Im alive and can move my body and hers is cold???

"Every bit of additional warming makes things worse, but conversely, every bit of warming that we can prevent makes things better," Michael Mann, the director of the Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media at the University of Pennsylvania, told Ali Rogin.

This past week, the EPA said it is reconsidering the scientific finding that greenhouse gases are a danger to public health. This comes as research shows average global temperatures in 2024 likely…

(Please please please let it be fake)
From a source: “Just had a co-presenter for a buildings research conference bow out. She’s a dual citizen and the FBI came knocking to ask her about her involvement in coauthoring chunks of the Paris Agreement.

Climate science is being literally (and I mean literally) criminalized.”

We are getting closer and closer to irreversible climate catastrophe. 2024 was the warmest year on record. It also saw higher than expected sea level rise and the highest sea levels since we began tracking this information in 1993.

The time for climate action is now!

Just heard that Trump is putting an end to atmospheric monitoring site NY67 that is run out of my lab. This is one of the oldest NADP sites in the US, continually measuring acid rain and other pollutants since 1977. Closing it down is tragic.

People might think that whatever destruction is done to science in the US, we can undo in 4 years with a Democratic president and Congress.

The problem is that many areas require specialized knowledge and skills built up over years, and once that's lost, it's hard to get back.
The damage will be far worse than just a 4-yr gap. Both I and the individual who has managed this site for most of the past 50 yrs are retiring within the next 2 years. With this closure, we will not be able to plan a transition.

Kind of miss whatever the world was like 10 years ago, especially on the internet. Some were aware of it, some hated it, some were invested in it and indulging in different fandoms. Now everyone’s more guarded, because digital footprint is a real thing.

I cannot in good mind just read a good article & keep thinking about just the article alone. I get so interested in the author. I try to look up more of their work. Who is their muse ? Does their soul reflect their writing ? I have more questions than answers.i get so fascinated by their existence.
