He's right, and it's not just Brazil.

Around the world, at least 31 democratic leaders who committed similar crimes have been jailed or banned from office since 2010. The failure to hold Trump accountable in the US was a unique and systemic failure of our institutions and political culture.

To this day, we don't know whether the Maxwell prosecution, along with the Rudy investigations, were among the things that Bill Barr was trying to kill by firing Geoffrey Berman in 2020.
So Trump has a problem when he's elected last year. What to do about Ghislaine Maxwell, who is appealing her sentence?

First he attempts to put someone who HIMSELF was accused of sleeping w/underaged woman as AG, Gaetz. Then he installed someone who, as FL AG, didn't pursue Epstein herself, Bondi.

I’ve never felt so unsafe in my life. The most incompetent people are running the country and Iran isn’t messing around.

Trump is an idiot and Hegseth is a yes man. Republicans better reign these clowns in or we’re fucked.

All of this is leading to a system that is breaking under the strain.

Case in point, my friend had to file a HABEAS to find out where his client was. She never did show up in the Detainee Locator.

That’s a sign of more and more mistakes being made — and ICE wasn’t great at compliance to start.
Update: my friend was quoted by @thecity.nyc as he waited to find out what happened.

It's two days later and he has no idea where his client is. She was detained on Wednesday morning at a check-in. She's not in the ICE Detainee Locator, and when he's called ICE they refuse to tell him where she is.

Now we see the President of the United States say he’d arrest a sitting American governor for disagreeing with these actions.

This is a hallmark of authoritarianism on the road to tyranny – and all Americans should be shocked and appalled by the President’s blatant disregard for our Constitution.

This could be in America this week
36 years ago, the world watched as thousands of ordinary Chinese citizens—unarmed and unafraid—gathered in Tiananmen Square to demand democracy.

While the regime responded with tanks and bullets, it could not crush their courage or silence their call for freedom.

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

And the Marco Rubio-authored Senate intelligence Committee report is even more brutal and damning.
To review: Putin's intelligence service hacked the DNC email system in '16 to help Trump. In '16, Putin offered Trump a Moscow building development deal. Trump’s '16 campaign chair, Paul Manafort, was in business with a Russian intelligence officer. Those are just the things in the Mueller report.
Trump is certainly acting in the last month, as in his first term, like someone who has some sort of weird special connection to Russia. There is no political upside or significant constituency in the U.S. for subservience to Russia on this level. Many will tolerate it perhaps, but none demand it.

As an offshoot of this thread, let’s talk about what happens if federal, state, or local officials text, email, call, or show up at your door wanting to talk to you about what you said about the President.

I have a theme, a thesis, a throughline, a leitmotif, which is SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH.

This is a First Amendment question combined with a practical question. The answer is as follows.

First, the First Amendment protects advocating the moral and practical necessity of breaking the law in the abstract.

Being a lawyer and all, do you know what the tipping point is for it to become acceptable to openly advocate for political assassinations? Just a little curious, is all.

The FDA, which operates under the authority of Robert Kennedy Jr., canceled the meeting to discuss next year’s flu vaccines.

This could interfere with or delay production of flu vaccines.

86 children and 19,000 adults have died from flu this season.

About 430,000 people were hospitalized.

The cancellation plays into fears among scientists who worry that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will use his position as health secretary to sow doubts about vaccines.

Yes, this Cabinet — with a Fox & Friends drunk, a Real World airhead, a former heroin addict who beheaded a whale, a dog killer, a Russian stooge, a scandal-plagued wrestling executive, etc — this Cabinet is LITERALLY the best America has ever had.

Thank you for that insight, Elon. Smart as ever.
Elon Musk at Trump's first Cabinet meeting: "I think this is the best Cabinet ever. Literally. So, uh, and I do not give false praise... I think it‘s literally the best Cabinet that the country has ever had."
