Kirk Hamilton had this very practical reason for games writers to read widely and it came down to the simple fact that writing in games is burdened with so much work that art was secondary, also you are barraged by PR blasts and talking points. you need to remind yourself what words can do.
the truth is a lot of Big Games with Good Stories are honestly Not Very Good in comparison to similar works in other media. Doesn't mean they aren't fun or very likable but I think games media needs to be careful with how it talks about a lot of these games.
