This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.

I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

Once again, I need people to stop confusing the order of your awareness with the order of oppression.

Ableism is not new. The popularity of ableist beliefs, including those about ADHD, is not new, and it’s pretty insulting to watch you “discover” it like a European guy tripping over a continent.

good grief. One of the AI slop cake recipes was a 6 inch cake cooked for 4 hours at 320°F.
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.

Thread. “AI is patching up the holes in conspiracy theories and so making them seem more reasonable, making them easier to spread and more resilient to collapse” was not on my bingo card.

AI relieves the pressure of cognitive dissonance. That’s … not great.
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

Have they considered that state-licensed IDs/Drivers Licenses will then contradict passports, which will create bureaucratic hell and possibly TSA hell for trans folx?

Of course not. What was I thinking.
The Trump administration has said that the U.S. passports of transgender people must now reflect the sex on their original birth certificate, reversing a decades-old practice under both Democratic and Republican administrations of allowing Americans to change the “F” and “M” markers.

hmm, how to say this

I suppose it is theoretically possible for old white male sf fans to disagree with Jemisin winning the award without lapsing into racist misogyny.

Haven't seen it yet, though.

Republicans repeated Trump's anti-trans strategy from 2024 and lost big. This should be instructive for Democrats.

We don't cast off one segment of society to save ourselves. It's a betrayal of everything we're trying to defend. It's a cowardly kind of self-preservation.

If your plan for escaping this bank robbery involves deliberately killing a few of our fellow hostages, maybe sit this chat out for a while?
This is why Gavin Newsom is a non-starter for me.

Sure, he's "a fighter" who's landed a few good punches on Trump, but that's not the same thing as a leader.

A real leader doesn't fight back against an authoritarian takeover by using the most vulnerable as his shield.
I keep seeing people say, oh, trans people must take a hit for the greater good and, first of all, no, you don't get to discard someone else's rights and second, we know from past experience that marginalized communities like theirs are merely the first to be targeted. They'll come for you next.

We literally do disagree about this, though. Some politicians want to take food from children and some politicians don't. Pretending this "isn't political" just allows the child-starving ghouls to get away with it.

Tell people who supports the *political program* to feed children and who doesn't!
