I was not at all surprised by the results - but I was taken aback by to surprise at the results. Surely you would expect the young to be more susceptible to conspiracy theories? They do not have enough life experience to know how things actually work in practice.

A lesser aspect, in the grand scheme of things, with Trump's administration is that no serious academic, researcher, advocate etc will be able to rely on any data and information generated by the US government.

I am not optimistic. A few years ago I would have offered this prescription: If you want to know the science, ask a scientist. But do not ask them to give their view; rather ask them what the consensus view is of subject matter experts, and how strong that consensus is.
8. This has been a short and honestly rather peevish thread, so if you want read more that has been written in a more equanimous tone, here's a short piece that I coauthored a few years ago, precisely about how we deal with this kind of duplicity.
To Fight Misinformation, We Need to Teach That Science Is Dynamic
Science is a social process, and teaching students how researchers work in tandem to develop facts will make them less likely to be duped by falsehoods

I don't say this lightly: The New York Times should fire the reporter and editor who chose to present a leak from the white house as if it was a leak from Harvard.

Don't print lies in the newspaper
Important details from this story:

1) Yet another news-break by student journalists (this time @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social) www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

2) Harvard saying "see you in court," not "let's make a deal."

3) Per Garber, WH/MAGA leaked news of a "deal." NYT then ran with it.

As of today, no retraction / correction from the NYT that I can find

There is an inherent tribal instinct in pack animals such as humans that kicks in when there is a perception of scarce resources. So when there is an economic downturn, or people think that they are not getting their fair share, populists can exploit this and easily whip up nationalism / racism.
something I keep thinking about and which I can't make up my mind on is: were swathes of the right, centre-right and, in some cases, the centre, full of racists hiding their beliefs for decades, or are these people all incredibly suggestible? neither answer is good!
large parts of UK politics are swinging far-right with very, very frightening speed, and racists are getting increasingly open about expressing their bigotry.

Probably fell on deaf ears, as the US has always had a strong isolationist streak. But I can see a time when US tech does get substantially shut out from the rest of the world, on the grounds that the US is unreliable & tends to weaponise everything it can. If so, that will hurt.

On purely aesthetic grounds, I cannot understand how people can complain about modern windmills but take in their stride the horrendous electricity pilons scarring the UK landscape or the telegraph pole sprawl in our cities. 'The shock of the new' I suppose.

Today’s political trial is one of the most notorious in American history: eight men charged with & convicted of murder in 1886 for a terrorist outrage that none of them committed. A witch hunt of the movement that was thought to have inspired it.

I don't really know what the right media response is to this, at this point, but it can't just keep being "We cover this & ask questions as if this is a regular president & it's normal politics as we've covered since WWII." Whatever norms of journalism folks thought they were upholding are gone.
Trump calls today's bad jobs report "rigged" and says, "I'll think you'll see some very interesting information come out. You have to have honest reports."
