Parliamentary call for a televised emergency briefing
For MPs and Peers to express support for briefing the nation on the threats from climate & nature breakdown to the UK’s security, food supply, health and economy.

Flooding just caused @nickoldridge.bsky.social and I to have to abandon our trip to meet Baroness Rosie Boycott in the House of Lords to discuss the National Emergency Briefing.

One tiny example of how mounting impacts will increasingly derail efforts to tackle climate change.

Yes - climate change presents a huge challenge. But the Climate Change Committee has modelled transitioning the UK economy to clean energy and finds it will save nearly £40 billion every year.

It's not just about avoiding the bad stuff.

We just need the courage to break out of business-as-usual.

2050? It’s happening right now and worsening fast - and we are absolutely not ready. MPs please - we need action.

BBC reporting on Earth (presumably):
"Strongly contradicting narratives emerging on the Earth's shape today. Video from space appears to show the planet is round, but this is strongly disputed by many who insist on its flat nature.
Whatever the truth, this debate is likely to remain divisive"
This perfectly demonstrates the pernicious nature of BBC two-sidism.

It almost always benefits the side with the most power.

In this case that's the side which is murdering peaceful protesters in the street, on camera, and then lying about it
The BBC coverage is absolutely terrible.

It leads on "sharply contested narratives"

It has a dramatic skew to the US government

It has posted the video but has failed to report on what it shows: it shows the US govt account is untrue

We are facing an extremely serious threat. There is much we can do, but action will not happen until the public is informed.

1. This short thread is about the issue that dominates almost every aspect of politics, and causes or exacerbates most of our problems: the extreme wealth of a small number of people. Here’s the amazing thing: almost the entire political class aligns with the ultra-rich against the rest. 🧵1/10

Sadly suppressing such a devastating report doesn’t make the risks go away - it just makes them even harder to deal with. Facing up to the truth is the first step to coping with it - it’s beyond scandalous that ministers tried to prevent this. They need to act - and fast

🚨 Very concerning that this report was "blocked by No 10 for being too negative" - blocked to MPs, blocked to public

Now we need a National Emergency Briefing on climate and risks on TV - real and evidence based - like had for COVID

For years, experts have warned that nature loss would become a security threat.

Now a national security assessment confirms it: biodiversity collapse risks food shortages, economic instability and global disorder.

Nature underpins our global safety. So why is UK Government failing to protect it?

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart governments do the math on investing in better mobility.

Let’s be clear— it WASTES public money to NOT do it.

Disinformation around climate action is surging just as threats escalate.

Governments can’t sit by in silence while public understanding is undermined.

Resilience comes from honest communication.

Time for a televised emergency briefing. MPs please sign:

Yesterday, the UK Gov published a report acknowledging this - 47 years later.

But they did so without any announcement. So very few people know.

Yesterday's Gov report tells us that UK "cannot currently produce enough food to feed its population based on current diets" and that as ecosystems collapse, other countries are likely to limit exports.

That means not enough to eat.

It really is time for Gov to brief the nation.

Europe and UK need to stop buying Trump’s fracked gas, shipped as liquified natural gas.

Here’s why imported #LNG is worse than coal, due to leaks all along the vast supply chain.

Natural gas (aka methane) is an incredibly potent greenhouse gas, 83 times worse than CO₂.
