By painting less details, things start to look more real. By keeping it loose it looks more alive and expressive. Simplifying shapes and abstracting is key, our brain fills in the gaps. By painting everything out you loose a lot of that and it starts to look bad and stiff.

Were 90s kids clamoring for a Batman cartoon with 1930s Art Deco aesthetics? Is that what the market demanded? Or did some really smart creative people have a vision and make a genre-defining hit that sustained 20 years of TV shows? If you want success look for vision, not just metrics.

2. Miyazaki’s funny big creature eyes. Not quite an oval. Surprisingly nuanced.
1. Bill Watterson’s twigs. No one understands the pure essence of a stick like he does.
