Fieldtrips, Sierra Tertiary geology, railroad history, dry stone construction, lime kiln preservation, travel, cultural history of all sorts
This critter has been roaming our close area for a couple of months.
Today, Rugby (Corgi) caught sight of it on our driveway and laid chase.
They were both gone into the brush without a sound. Normally, he barks his head off at intruders...deer, turkeys.
A bit alarming, actually.
Relief, he's back

Steve Webb and Amin Taha have been promoting the environmental values of building with stone for some years now with previous projects. See 'Back to the Stone Age' in the Guardian.

Here's my grandson's [6yo] collection of stones from today's scouting around the house.
I showed him the stone vending machine. He thinks it is very cool. [Hell, I think it is very cool!]
He wants to go there to get some stones out. I said, maybe later today.
🤣

Here's a feature of the Native Americans' occupation of the Sierra Nevada range that has escaped my attention ...salt basins carved into the granite bedrock. check it out.

I have to share a special moment this morning...
Upon entering the house of my neighbor friend, he asked to leave the doors open due to a kestrel flying in and having difficulty escaping.
I finally just grabbed it and launched it outside.
Zoom in to see its face.

"British geology"?

Me thinks that Sedgwick misspoke.

Should have read "Father of Geology".

Unusual stone.

So did I, @pavementgeology.bsky.social !
Perhaps this can be a model for your own podcasts of some of your fav urban geology walks for those of us who aren't able to attend in person. I'd be a regular listener!

We are two weeks into the new reign. The drive to Make America Great Again is just beginning. Shame that the electorate was unaware that MAGA translates to the place being run solely by and for the purposes of white men.

Or maybe it did. Everybody is complicit.
Fellow NSA - National Security Agency veterans. Look at what’s happened at the National Cryptologic Museum. They covered up with brown paper the photos of Women in American Cryptology. All in response to President Trump’s anti-diversity executive order.

Perhaps we should look after our own planet first.
Get that right and everything else will flow from that, surely?

Yosemite Valley is perfect at this time of year. Fewer visitors.

Glacial features in your face. Bridalviel Creek cascades from a hanging valley.

The Merced River has cut into a combination of ground moraine and glacial outwash.

Light snow overnight. Can't wait to see the valley today!

Curbside geology is so convenient. But exceptional features are rare.

The granite is probably from the Bohemian Massive.

I love the smoke ring.
Now we’re cooking! I think I’ll call this the “Tahoma Aroma”. LiDAR-derived scale model of Tahoma (Rainier) engineered to fit over a stock “volcano” diffuser. Folks would have to buy diffuser on Amazon for $30, and then this top for $20(?). Whadda ya think?

Interesting. They must have been confident that the stone pillars had good shear strength.

A good one for #urbangeology
December 22, 1689, a strong #earthquake hits #Innsbruck in #Tyrol (#Austria).
As a response "earthquake pillars"-reinforced stone pillars made from the local "Höttinger Breccia" & build into the walls to stabilize the buildings-become mandatory.

You know know what's aggravating is that orgs that have opened a bluesky account are still largely posting on the other forum. So, to see any of their posts, one has to return to the ash bin. A good example is @cumbriawildlife.bsky.social with 1.1k followers on bsky but not one post! Argh!
