In a world of selfish authoritarians, be a plugged-in politician like Mamdani in NYC. Work for everyone, not to grab for yourself.
One week ago, thousands of New Yorkers tried something new.

They heard about it last minute. They didn’t know where it would take them or who they would meet. It was free, earnest, even educational.

It was the #ZcavengerHunt and it was a thing of beauty.

Governing land, landscapes and infrastructure for a just energy transition [Commentary]
India’s renewable energy transition is accelerating, marked by a drop in fossil fuel power generation and a push for green investment.

In the world of 2025, bet like China on an electro-state future, not like the US on being a petro-state. Wish Norway would embrace the first right proper instead of desperately clinging to the latter as it fades. Today, build like it's for tomorrow, not as you recall from yesterday.
Sobering piece in @nytimes.com compares China's advances in clean energy to the U.S.'s retrenchment in fossil fuels. Hard to read at a moment when the U.S. is giving up on a more affordable, healthier, and more sustainable future.

Spain responding rightly to an astute and evidenced understanding of the outage by improving technical systems support to continue exponential expansion of renewable energy. The fossil fuel lobby cannot win over facts in a competitive market with informed governance and management of energy systems.
1/6 After April’s huge power outage, Spain is responding with climate leadership—not in spite of the crisis, but because of it.
A new proposed law would ramp up renewables, storage & electrification to make 🇪🇸's grid cleaner, more reliable, & independent.

A useful overview of electrification and deep decarbonisation, pointing out the need for a lot more electricity production to move towards net zero targets.
In order to keep global warming below 1.5C or 2C, we need to move industrial activity to clean energy. This will MORE THAN DOUBLE our global need for electricity.

We are going to need a LOT more wind, solar, geothermal, and other clean electricity than most people are expecting.

Such a treat to witness the mesmerising @buggewesseltoft.bsky.social (twice!), the awesome @harukimurakami.bsky.social with sage reflections, and the one and only Mari Boina who evocatively recited a Palestinian poem and called for an end to the Israeli genocide. Packed house and a standing ovation.

Lovely to be in beautiful Bergen for the kickoff of the ECOBUDGETS project about sustainability budgeting related to municipal work on climate and land use planning. Useful reflections shared to inform my role as an advisor on this @uibcet.bsky.social collaboration with a range of societal partners.

Death of a glacier, climate murder, indifferent = complicit.
Seeing Blatten buried again and again, from every angle...

Properly staggering! 😮😱
May 28, 2025 at 9:00 PM
Bearing witness: apocalypse now. For this glacier anyway.
INCREDIBLE !!

Here we are... 😱😱😱

After days of overloading and cracks propagating, Birch Glacier collapsed today at 3.24 pm over Blatten and the dammed Lonza river...

Devastating! 😭

This train is gonna gather speed.
NEW from me: China's CO2 emissions fell ~1.6% in the first quarter and have now been flat or down for more than a year. This is the first time on record that emissions are falling due to clean energy growth, not slow power demand.

Good things come in twos! Here's a nifty summary takeaway and links to two latest pieces by @jeremywallace.bsky.social
Great article! My takeaways:
1) Is grid-scale BESS integration slower (relative to solar) than we'd expect?
2) Absent faster storage integration or more clean firm generation, coal usage will be sticky. That's why electrification sees China ADD coal capacity, albeit with an altered usage profile.
I wrote a thing. Strike that. I wrote two things.

1. China's energy megabases matter. China is the first electrostate, and its megabases are key pieces that will help make the energy transition clean (even if there's still some coal).

Towards dynamic evaluations: Assessing the politics of Stavanger’s free public transport experiment

Double whammy and the power of cascading effects to amplify system risks.
This is the best information we have so far on the blackout in Spain/Portugal.

First one power station/plant stopped supplying power, but the system was able to restore the correct frequency/voltage, then 1.5 seconds later another one stopped too, and the system was unable to cope.

Common wealth, not "walling in and walling out", argues Carmen Mapis in the Frostian tradition of 'Mending wall' in this op-ed against luxury privatisation of Norwegian nature: www.nrk.no/ytring/hygge.... 'Hyggeplyndring' is a cheeky coinage riffing off of 'hytteplyndring' to drive home a key point!

Wow! Huge power outage in Spain/Portugal. Just managed to pull this from the Spanish grid operator's website before it timed out. Demand cratered from 25GW to less than 10GW in an instant. 🔌💡
