Oslo-based. Research Professor at The Fridtjof Nansen Institute and Professor II at the University of Bergen. Energy social science expert on the governance of transitions.
Such a treat to witness the mesmerising @buggewesseltoft.bsky.social (twice!), the awesome @harukimurakami.bsky.social with sage reflections, and the one and only Mari Boina who evocatively recited a Palestinian poem and called for an end to the Israeli genocide. Packed house and a standing ovation.

Lovely to be in beautiful Bergen for the kickoff of the ECOBUDGETS project about sustainability budgeting related to municipal work on climate and land use planning. Useful reflections shared to inform my role as an advisor on this @uibcet.bsky.social collaboration with a range of societal partners.

It was a truly wonderful start to our PhD course across Oslo and Rjukan this week, and the cherry tree at @fridtjofnanseninst.bsky.social was in full bloom for the group photo after a fjord swim :) a treat to engage with this perceptive group of participants!

Cold at home in Norway: a third of tenants (about 20% are tenants), a sixth of the remaining 80% who are homeowners. Energy poverty is one of the most unrecognised problems in our energy-rich country. Right up there with energy elitism and fossil fuel favouritism in energy policy and energy finance.

A clear case being made for changed priorities in the Norwegian energy system, with much more attention to heating. The same applies for a priority to solar that politicians haven't understood, as they're content to subsidise tariffs as a populist measure that disrupts timely future energy finance.

A nice illustration of energy efficiency measures from Mie Fuglseth who leads Grønn Byggallianse and emphasises the value of identifying nodes where easy wins can be achieved. "Wanted: energy thieves!"

And of course federal support is essential for municipal efforts to thrive, so it is terrific to see our energy minister Terje Aasland @ed.regjeringen.no grace the day's proceedings. An exciting programme ahead and lots to be done fast to achieve big targets!

Great to see a city take a timely initiative to gather momentum on low-carbon energy transitions! @oslokommune.bsky.social welcomes a large mixed audience to its third annual energy conference, with a focus on a zero emission city and future energy systems. Congrats, @heidisorensenoslo.bsky.social!

Ah, birdsong, as spring softly glides over @fridtjofnanseninst.bsky.social, its every touch a blessing old as time.

A masterclass by @booker.senate.gov on how to take the floor and stand up for what's right by speaking truth to power. Warm applause when he yielded the floor after over 25 hours.

An introspective walk around the quaint town was part of this morning's rumination exercise.

We're being treated to a masterclass in island community energy and transition dynamics here at Stromness on Orkney. The views are quite alright, too! Thanks to our Research Council of Norway funded @empoweredfutures.bsky.social

A memorable start to our field excursion on the Orkney islands with the @empoweredfutures.bsky.social research school. Days for intense exploration of archipelago energy landscapes.

A very memorable afternoon spent with visiting colleagues from Durham who gave terrific talks at @fridtjofnanseninst.bsky.social and especially lovely to catch up with Gavin Bridge at leisure. Academia is made fun and warm by the care and attention that we accord each other and to our common effort.

It's terrific to see the engagement during this TransformERS meeting in Koper, where our session asks "How do we engage with low-carbon energy transformation across sectors, at what scales through which actors?" - happy to be able to join from afar. Looking forward to hosting the Oslo workshop soon!

An engaged @empoweredfutures.bsky.social policy roundtable at the human geography winter seminar this morning with Brita Hermelin @liu.se.web.brid.gy and @karolinaisaksson.bsky.social contributing insights across governance scales from Sweden and @hildesol.bsky.social discussing resonance in Norway.

A lovely start to the day (and fun to be greeted with birthday wishes!) as Per Gunnar Røe @uio.no gives his keynote talk on the politics of urban mobility: Considering socio-ecological implications and suggesting avenues for geographical research.
March 13, 2025 at 8:05 AM
A wonderfully varied and educative mix of discussion on mobility during the human geography winter seminar in Oslo. A highlight is being gathered at Byens Tak after a guided tour of Youngstorget to debate politics of urban development, on the heels of overarching reflections on more global mobility.
March 12, 2025 at 7:27 PM
It's fun to be at the winter seminar in human geography, an annual highlight that convenes disciplinary kin. This year it is chaired by Per Gunnar Røe and day one starts with a keynote talk by @mimisheller.bsky.social on the theme of mobility justice (the politics of movement in an age of extremes).

It's a great day as (co-)supervisor for Emma Lord to see the second of her three PhD articles accepted for publication. Diligent empirical work and a good learning process through useful reviews and revision - work I'm happy to have co-authored in this case, too. Looking forward to seeing it online!
February 21, 2025 at 12:18 PM
She argues for transcending stopgap solutions (what I've called 'monoculturing' without confronting hegemonic traits) and treating causes rather than symptoms, offering a fascinating analysis of global researchers' learning relating to navigation of politicised processes/societies for policy impact.

Lovely to receive this overview on transformative change for a just and sustainable world from @estherturnhout.bsky.social based on reflections from the massive exercise of collectively drafting @ipbes.net reports on these vital and urgent themes. "The masks are off - risky moment in time" she says.
February 19, 2025 at 9:31 AM
The @ipbes.net transformative change assessment report is brought together with the nexus assessment report to create churn at the national level through processes like this one today in Denmark. An evident need downscaled to neighbourhoods like Nordhavn too. www.conferencemanager.dk/symposium-tr...

Quite the vibe as Hartmut Rosa and Monique Scheer engage with Noa Redington at Copenhagen Conversations @nationalmuseet.bsky.social, from resonance to enthusiasm and from social acceleration to the age of anger:https://natmus.dk/aktivitet/copenhagen-conversations-med-hartmut-rosa-og-monique-scheer/
