I want a cure. I’m watching the chance of one in my lifetime slip away.
Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

Indirect rates are not determined by NIH. Instead, they are the product of elaborate negotiations between each institution and the “cognizant federal agency” according to an Office of Management and Budget document, Circular A-21.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

Long read, very instructive on the mechanisms & misconceptions re LC. „Long COVID is blood vessel damage, brain damage, organ damage, immune system damage, and mitochondrial damage. It is real, it is devastating, and it is happening to people every day. And it can happen to you, after any infection“
Worked hard on this, and I hope it will be a useful resource for many.

I have seen this tweet go by a thousand times today and I’m sure he has it muted now but if someone in my life said this to me I would probably cry and love them hard for opening up to this painful knowledge.

Tell this to your disabled people. (They might be pissed at you but that’s good too.)
This is probably not a surprise to people in the disability community, and I apologize for my ignorance about it, but I have been genuinely surprised how much immediate government wrath is going towards people in the disability community

It is v interesting that altho most of the legal convo on this site yesterday about the OMB freeze of federal funding focused on impoundment issues, the complaint that led to the administrative stay of the freeze last night instead made a 1A argument. 🧵

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"
