I understand the sentiment of folks seeing the bike infrastructure and feeling like it’s the culprit of their neighborhood changing. But gentrification has often deeper causes, such as a lack of affordable housing in a region, leading to middle class folks to look for housing in low-income areas

I met some of the Forest Service firefighters at the grocery store just now. They had soot on their hands and faces. They’re working on the mountain through the night. One of them said, “It’s definitely a labor of love!”

The security reason to electrify transport is not about oil imports, it’s economic resilience. Oil powers 90% of US vehicles, so when the price of oil spikes because of a war, people & companies pay more for energy, which hurts the economy. The more transport is electrified, econ security goes up.

It’s not just the law, it’s also the safe thing to do, especially if kids are crossing. Trust me, you’re not saving any time

This is my old city journalist brain firing but I believe that the USA way of isolating everybody into unwalkable suburbia, requiring private cars for existence, & removing true public space has had a disastrous effect on the US's sense of community & empathy and we must, but won't, deal with that

I cannot overstate how it enrages me that I, a driver of a car, seem to be among a dwindling number of drivers who devote their full attention to driving the car.

Calls and text messages have flooded me in the last 72 hours from friends and colleagues in Sierra Leone and elsewhere: Are my meds going to be cut off? Am I going to die? I don't know what to tell them. I don't know what to tell anyone. Hope is my whole jam, but I feel very distant from it.

A quick note: if JWST ever finds signs of extraterrestrial life, no scientist or NASA/ESA official will know before EVERYONE knows, because it would be ridiculously foolish to take seriously any detection claim that hasn’t been published & thoroughly scrutinized by the global scientific community.
