We really need a Link Wray historical marker at the old Fredericksburg VA armory where he performed Rumble for the first time. I always think about his line in Shine A Light about stopping at a country store on Route 301.

RIP. Damn, he was a giant for me when I was a kid. Got his autograph on a Mars Blackmon tshirt at the Dave Odom basketball camp where I saw Randolph Childress tear his ACL in a pickup game.

nice to see callender getting some shine. a dozen years ago, i wrote liner notes for a reissue of his later album, "the way," nixed just before (re)production by a former label owner. lost slices of weird new yawk.

50 years ago today. There are a few clips of him doing this with the RTR (from NY and Montreal), and there's not a huge difference, but I saw some footage of this specific performance that I hadn't seen before from the Bob Dylan Center during their showing at the Loft Film Fest a couple of weeks.

OTD 1969 James Brown drags his road-weary band into King Studios in Cincinnati to record. Drummer Clyde Stubblefield bangs out a drum pattern Brown crafts into "Funky Drummer." Minor hit but it forms a foundational beat in Hip-Hop. The bldg remains vacant & standing but King left in 1971.
