My wife, Sylvia, died this morning. 💔
“When the door
scraped shut, it was the end
of all the sounds there are.
You left me
beside the quietest fire in the world.”

It has been a very long day. Good night all.

But then I look down and Rula is looking like this, hoping she can stay here tonight and not be taken (3 doors down) back home. But she has to go home, and I’m sad again.

You run outside all winter because your body needs it, and it’s good to get outside in all but the worst weather.
Even so, it frequently sucks. It’s cold and windy and slippery. They’re not good miles; they’re just miles.
Some days, though, there are compensations.

I brought Sylvia (God keep her) there in April of 2013. I thought she might buy something extravagant. Not her. Two canvas tote bags stamped w/ the store's name. I have a photo of her stood outside. She used the bags for 8+ years after on every trip to our grocery store. Until they & she fell apart.

Turns out Ellington’s “The Single Petal of a Rose” is a pretty good song to work on when your dog really wants to be petted. And the one group of mistakes a couple of minutes in weren’t even his fault.

Rain (Elizabeth Taylor)
“Sodden cattle stood facing north, or hunched under hedges in the drizzle. The train ripped through the sullen landscape like scissors through calico; each time it veered round westwards rain hit the window in long slashes.”

“Nightmares of boredom and melancholy oozed from him[, infecting all the social atmosphere round about. Somebody put a drink in his hand. Tension relaxed a little.]”
The sixth issue of my newsletter, This, Not That, is out today. It's a commonplace book issue, offering the first 50 of what will, after a subsequent issue, be 100 quotes about the bore, the bored, the boring, and boredom. (A fun thing: 5 of the people quoted are writers I know!)

Every day, I pick this guy up and ask him if it’s the day when he decides that he likes being held. Every day thus far, it has not been.
(It’s fine. He likes to sleep on my legs all night and sit near me on the couch. That’ll do.)
