The function of the waffles joke is an in-group signifier. Singal, Graber, and Oppiliappan are showing in-group solidarity; they're all in on a joke. The joke is they have institutional power, and you don't, and they feel contempt for you, that you still want to have opinions about how power's used.

Believe trans people when we tell you the 'science' behind the Cass Report is as solid as the 'science' behind paracetamol causing autism.

This, from the Quakers, is a pretty good example of how to resist pressure from bigot lobbying groups. Effectively “we legally can allow trans people to use the loo, we morally should, and we tried it and nothing bad happened”

Spent a while lying in a field watching the stars & started feeling the urge to create new mythologies for the night sky.

It's surprising, sometimes, that we really are the same people as those humans thousands of years ago

This is literally what people do when they're not left scrambling for survival every hour of every day. They build communities, create things, contribute. Wikipedia isn't an anomaly, it is a distillation of human nature itself
“Wikipedia is this economic anomaly. In many ways, it’s sort of magical that people will just volunteer without explicit economic incentives to create artifacts that are meant to share knowledge with everyone in the world”

okay but why does it take one guy who's affected to improve something? can we not do our part in making stuff work in the first place? jesus fucking christ, do we have to employ people with every set of different abilities on every single project in order to make things work. we should be ashamed

With some suggestions from @osiewicz.bsky.social and @wezm.net, got the compile time down even further -- to 9s!

(down from 175s at the start, and 32s at the end of the original post)

New details added at the end of the post :)
Spent the last ~month trying to figure out why compiling my website took so long. Decided to turn it into a blog post :)

If you're part of the ~queer community~ or adjacent a better way to deal with your dumb feelings about how annoying everyone is, how stupid the kids are and how patronizing the olds, how much you can't stand your ex, how bad you got hurt etc, is to go down swinging for each other no matter what, imo

dragon lady next to me at the second life rave was too close and her wings kept clipping through my player model. I didn't mind but she apologied each and every time it happened. chat was filled with hundreds of variations of "oop sowwie >_<!! xoxo" and "uaah! not again! orz" by the end of the night

what this ultimately means is, there is no path to defeating fascism that does not explicitly depend on our willingness to defend people who are different from us, and to fight against forms of oppression we do not directly experience.
