"We cannot build bananas in America" is an all timer
DEAN: What's the tariff on bananas?

LUTNICK: Generally 10%

DEAN: Walmart has already increased the cost of bananas by 8%

LUTNICK: If you build in America, there is no tariff

DEAN: We cannot build bananas in America

BREAKING: Scott Pelley just risked everything to make one thing clear:
The attack on free speech isn’t coming—it’s already here.

Journalists are being silenced, critics are being punished, and most of the media’s playing dead.

This is state-sponsored suppression. This is dictatorship in real time.

This is insane. Republicans have inserted language into the budget reconciliation bill that would ban states from regulating AI in any capacity for 10 years.

So let me get this straight: masks are bad and un-American if worn to fight a pandemic, but good if worn by people claiming to be government agents when they kidnap people off the street

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

Democracy is burning, and we need sites like Bluesky more than ever. And Senator Durbin wants to repeal 230, which would massively stifle the ability of sites like Bluesky to exist, while massively empowering X and Meta.

Why?

It seems that someone in his office doesn't understand 230.
It’s time to repeal Section 230. We must be able to take social media companies to court for addicting kids and enabling drug trafficking on their platforms.
Sen. DURBIN: Fentanyl often gets to our kids and young people through the internet.

Section 230 absolves social media companies from any responsibility. “That has got to end.”

some reporters have been too loose with phrasing like DEI. makes it sound like it's all abt post-George Floyd murder stuff. As he notes, they're ditching anti-discrimination policies that go back to LBJ.

Fox had 26, 9 and 3 in only 33 minutes of play.

I LOVE this distribution which allows Fox to go all out during the minutes he plays, not having to save himself, and then lets Ellis (and now Carter) sub in for defense during Fox’s rest periods.

I think journalists, policymakers and good govt types are struggling to understand DOGE because their mental model is that it is a government reform commission, operating like previous ones. Maybe. But it might be better to start thinking about it as a hostile takeover of the govt by oligarchs.

We live in a new age of magical thinking. Notably this is not (just) due to it being an age of ignorance. Rather there has been a political revelation that approaching the world through a magical and fantasist epistemology is the new source of power.
NEW: The type of conspiracy-thinking that used to brew in small corners of the internet is now a second language for all of us. Here’s what drone panic says about this moment — when paranoia jumps across political lines and online bubbles. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
In online drone panic, conspiracy thinking has gone mainstream
Authorities are urging calm. But with trust in media and other institutions at all-time lows, fringe theories are winning the day.

Just for context, 34 NBA seasons would be ~15,000 player seasons.

16 such fractures in 15,000 seasons for the rest of the NBA, compared 3 in 9 seasons for Embiid.

These aren't repetitive stress injuries or re-aggravations of existing injuries. It's really, really, bad luck.
I dug up a study from 2020 that found just 53 incidences of facial fractures over 34 years of NBA play. That included just 15 orbital bone fractures and one sinus fracture.

Embiid has now had three just by himself.

More on last night's game:
