Just another annoying YIMBY
Good thread
People are treating Chris Whipple's Susie Wiles articles in Vanity Fair today as big news - the NYT even recapped them. But Wiles is no dummy; she knows how to work the press. These articles read like a Trump press release, excuse after excuse with no pushback. It's the anti-Chotiner interview. 1/

Amazing news!
MAJOR NEWS: @GavinNewsom signed SB 79, my bill allowing more housing near public transit — rail, subway, rapid bus.

It’s a huge step for housing in California. It’ll create more homes, strengthen our transit systems & reduce traffic & carbon emissions.

Thank you, Governor!

It's 2015. President Barack Obama has accepted a "sky palace" jumbo jet from the Qatari government, which he'll own after he leaves office. "Everybody relax," he says in an interview with the New York Times. Everyone does. The networks then televise the military parade in his honor on his birthday.

The only thing that keeps me warm during this long cold night of American politics is the fact that Gavin Newsom will never be president, no matter how hard he tries.

The replies to this are wild, full of conspiracy theories and copium. We have to face the fact that as a nation we did this to ourselves during a free and fair election. It's unbelievable, it's heartbreaking, but it's true.
The decisive test of our society in my lifetime was the 2024 election and our failure was spectacular and total. I will never again have any faith in the American electorate to do the obviously right thing.

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source.

Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

my hottest take is that cities are not museums. they need to be able to change and evolve or they will die.

My first and definitely last time working with the Los Angeles Times. Editing out the most urgent point of an OpEd in the minutes before sending to press while then also assigning a title and image that suggest an argument entirely opposite to the author’s clear intent is pretty shitty.

This is, and should be seen by our state's policymakers as, an urgent crisis to solve.
Sunny but expensive: Thousands more workers left California than arrived during a stretch last year. Here's where they went.
Thousands more workers left California for job opportunities in other states than moved into the state, according to a recent report. High housing costs were a major factor in the migration.
