DO NOT sit down in a waiting room and start playing videos out loud on your phone.

The most important thing to remember about all this fantasy-engineering of the Constitution is Madison's warning: If we suck as a people, no clever constitutional schemes will save us.

Dearest Martha,

The National Guard stand solemn watch at the Krispy Kreme tonight. I cannot tell if they defend the people from the donuts, or the donuts from the people. Powdered sugar hangs in the air like cannon smoke. Jensen took a hot coffee to the face, he may never recover.

Yours in glaze,

Once you create the weapons of state coercion, you can't be surprised when someone you don't like picks them up and uses them in ways that will horrify you.
Individual freedom works for white guys. Turns out you need the power of the state to deliver it to everyone else.

I spent a chunk of my early career covering efforts to criminalize filming the police. That should bother people. I get that law enforcement faces scrutiny. But if you want a taxpayer-funded gun and badge, the public has a right to see how you use them.

As a conservative, there are many social functions I don't think it's the business of the federal government to perform. But as a conservative, I also believe that recklessly pulling the legs out from under people who have come to rely on certain systems being in place is neither right nor prudent.
