A tiger, an elephant, a giraffe--you know.
Sometimes democracy dies in broad daylight.
Me to you, I know what it’s going to take.
Et tu, Indiana?
Indiana Senate Republican Greg Walker “said he would have reported the alleged violation to federal authorities “if I thought that there was anyone of integrity in Washington that would follow through on my accusation ..”

Her: “You okay?”
Me [In my head I’m experiencing the scene near the end of Terminator 2 where the T-1000 writhes in a vat of molten steel as he transforms into everyone he’s imitated (but in horribly distorted form), then screams in pain and dissolves]: “I’m fine.”

Baby steps. Possible, though, that the tech model of the adoption curve is in play here.

Every Trump press gathering.
the baby (17 months) raised both her hands and said “WEADY?” so I said “ready!” and then she slapped me in the face

We’re 2 weeks from “Burn all the witches!”
it's hard to get your mind around how irredeemably broken this country has become. no one in charge at this time seems to understand even the basics of our system of government as written or our stated set of values as a secular society

Let’s preemptively ban this vaccine in the US now in case it, like, may cause people to grow horns according to some yet-to-be- invented study.
Brazil approves the first vaccine against dengue. The disease killed 6000 Brazilians in 2024.

This is a really remarkable achievement. I got dengue in 2015, and even with the mild case I had, it was a really miserable experience.

Often someone in hospice care will, for no medical reason, experience a temporary burst of energy and lucidity before the end.

The National Guard shouldn’t have been in DC: Insensitive and politicized generalization.

Afghans shouldn’t be in the US: Level-headed, practical leadership.

What childhood trauma is this man trying to overcome? And why do the rest of us have to help him get past it? I don’t want to sound insensitive but what an asshole.

The corruption can be open but the criticism can't be.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

“Details remain unclear” is the mantra of this administration. Just 1. declare as a fact peace, affordability, free speech, anti-antisemitism, election reform, anti-corruption measures, etc; 2. see it repeated by the cowed and incurious media; and 3. watch everyone forget it didn’t actually happen.

Listening to a London Review of Books podcast series, “Aftershock: The War on Terror,” on the public/government/media rhetoric after 9/11. Episode 1 was undercut completely by the narrator’s overripe “was Princess Di murderered??!!” tone. Keep calm, buddy. The record is bad enough.

Widely disliked private school headmaster trying to defend the fact that the only black kid on the soccer team got duct-taped to the goal after practice in a "prank" organized by the senior co-captains. Waiting for Kavanaugh to suggest that racially biased voting maps only temporarily inconvenience non-white voters, and furthermore that posting ICE agents outside polling places would fall under the "Two Birds With One Stone" doctrine and would therefore be okay.

Here’s the playbook:
1. Support an aggressive state that gleefully kills the other side’s civilians.
2. Celebrate that country’s leader as your dear friend.
3. Impose his vision of a “solution” w/o consulting the other side.
4. Declare peace despite continuing violence.
5. Petulantly demand praise.
