Whether it's the killing of Renee Good or any of the other countless atrocities that have befallen America since Trump returned to power, all I want is for Democratic leaders to at least act like they understand the stakes. That they understand that the Trump Regime is a criminal enterprise and that we're in an unprecedented Constitutional crisis. To stop with the business-as-usual, even if it's merely rhetorical. To be sure, I'm realistic about this. I know how Congress works. I know that a party in the minority cannot impose their will and that they can't stop what's happening right now. But I do want them to at least acknowledge it and communicate with Americans in a way that demonstrates that they understand why so many of us are being driven to madness and tears at the country being destroyed. I want them to engage in argument and persuasion which meets the moment and which makes it clear that, when the political situation does change, they will act in decisive ways. This can happen in any number of ways, such as making sure to find the cameras and the microphones to make it clear where they stand when shit goes down. The articulation of a moral stance. It can also happen such as in simply not going along with the Trump Regime in any way whatsoever. Don't vote for things he wants and don't try to find common ground, because finding common ground with a criminal enterprise in a Constitutional crisis only serves to normalize the regime's anti-democratic behavior and to make one an accomplice to criminality. For example, voting for Trump's judicial and political nominees is the opposite of acknowledging that the Trump regime is a criminal enterprise and that we're in an unprecedented Constitutional crisis. Especially when the nominee in question is a partisan hack like Alexander Van Hook of Louisiana, who believes that the 2020 election was stolen and who, during his confirmation hearing, refused to say what happened on January 6, 2021. That dude was confirmed yesterday. Worse: he was confirmed thanks to Democrats voting for him. Specifically, Dick Durbin (IL), Maggie Hassan (NH), Tim Kaine (VA), Amy Klobuchar (MN), Jeanne Shaheen (NH), Peter Welch (VT), and Angus King (I-ME) all voted yeah. What's even worse than that is that, given that several Republicans were absent from the vote, if all of the Democrats and the independent who caucuses with Democrats had voted no, the vote would've failed. This happens time and again, with many of the same Senators – including Durbin, Kaine, and Klobuchar – always voting yes on Trump nominees. I will never understand this. I will never understand why Democrats are helping the Trump Regime. I will never understand why Democratic leadership does not punish caucus members who do in the name of party loyalty and discipline. Saying no to Trump's nominees is the lowest possible bar, and these Democrats simply can't clear it. It's particularly galling in the case of Klobuchar, whose constituent was murdered by the Regime's secret police just 24 hours before. How one can treat Trump as legitimate under these circumstances is beyond me. If you're going to fight something, fight it. Fight it with everything you've got. If you don't, why on Earth should we take you seriously when you claim you care?

DHS claims that Renee Nicole Good tried to run over the agents, but there is copious video footage and eyewitness testimony showing that to be a lie. Good was sitting in her stopped car. ICE officers screamed at her to move her car, she attempted to move, and they shot her multiple times through the windshield and the open driver side window. There were no warnings. There were no attempts to deescalate. Just an immediate resort to deadly force for the "crime" of blocking traffic. This killing reminds me of how, in 2023, a suburban Columbus cop killed a pregnant woman named Ta’Kiya Young by shooting through her windshield in a grocery store parking lot. Young was suspected of shoplifting, nothing more. The cop was actually indicted for murder but he walked after claiming that Young tried to run him down. The cops have a playbook. They know if they simply say "she was coming right at me" that a lot of people will buy it because a lot of people want to believe cops regardless of what the reality on the ground happens to be. The authorities in this country have been killing people with impunity for centuries, sometimes even when there has been clear video of it. This is the latest example of it. Good was 37. She was an award-winning poet. She had a six year-old daughter whose father died in 2023 and now her mother has been murdered by Donald Trump's masked secret police force, after which the United States government and its allies in the media spent the day telling outrageous lies about her. I agree with them that an act of terrorism occurred yesterday, but it was perpetrated by the United States government, not Good. Don't let the government tell you that you're wrong about what you see with your own two eyes. America is lost. It's completely lost and it is marching deeper and deeper into darkness every day. We're past the point of mere elections fixing it. It's going to take the prosecution of scores if not hundreds of members of the current regime and the eradication of their evil and lawless works to even begin to put us on something resembling a path back into the light. Like, that's where we have to start to even have hope of a positive future. We cannot go back. We must forge a new path forward and through. Anyone who promises, with clarity and conviction, to do that has my support. Anyone without the courage to do so does not.

Allison and I have been traveling since late last week and jet lag was still messing with me so I was awake and online scrolling just as the news began breaking of the attack on Venezuela Saturday morning. Most of the US was asleep as the word was spreading and for the next several hours I watched as my friends and other people I follow woke up and posted some equivalent of "what the fuck?!" It's amazing after all of these years of authoritarianism and blatant illegality that Trump maintains the ability to surprise, but I spent most of my Saturday in a gobsmacked stupor. To say what Trump has done and what he is continuing to do in Venezuela is brazenly illegal is an understatement of massive proportions. The attack itself was a textbook act of aggression in violation of the U.N. charter. The arrest, removal, and imprisonment of Nicolás Maduro and his wife was an abduction, not a "capture" as so many media outlets have put it. Trump's vow to take over Venezuela's oil reserves and to "run" the country is an admission that this is all about plunder and conquest despite whatever weak and wildly inconsistent legal justifications Trump and his accomplices have been trotting out over the past 48 hours. Calling the invasion of Venezuela a "law enforcement" operation doesn’t make it legal and doesn't make that assertion true. And to be sure, the notion that Maduro is himself a bad actor doesn't justify this. Anyone starting their official statements off with "While I am happy that Maduro has been removed from power . . . " is giving cover to Trump. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Venezuela's leadership, this still constitutes an unlawful use of force against a sovereign nation which violates both international law and U.S. domestic law. And despite all of that, Trump is threatening even more nations, telling reporters over the weekend that Colombia, Mexico, and Cuba are potential targets while reasserting his dangerously irresponsible threats against Greenland. Trump is an out-of-control war criminal. America is a rogue nation. None of this is justified in any conceivable way and anyone who attempts to justify it is either an idiot or a stooge. Yes, I know there are precedents for this – Panama and any number other previous incidents of American aggression – but those precedents were mostly illegal too and that this is the tenth or one hundredth time America has meddled with, attacked, and/or oppressed another sovereign nation doesn't change that. No one excused Ted Bundy's 25th murder because, hey, he had already killed 24 people before that. The only way one can even begin to atone for past bad acts is to stop being a bad actor and that's nothing the United States has ever thought about doing. Every Democratic elected official should be calling for Trump’s impeachment. They should be doing it now. They should be doing it loudly. They should be doing it continuously. They should file articles of impeachment immediately, in fact. I don't care that the effort will fail due to Republican control of Congress. You do it anyway to make it clear that laws still matter and to make it clear that what is happening is, in fact, unlawful. You do it to force everyone to take a side. You do it because, politically, it's the only way to get a ball rolling that could, at least theoretically, put Trump in check or serve as a warning to future would-be tyrants. You do it because to do nothing is to condone brazen illegality. You it because, morally, it's the right thing to do. Beyond what happens domestically, we should be condemned by the international community. Other countries should be pulling their ambassadors, boycotting the L.A. Olympics, the World Cup, and whatever else one does to pariah nations. I'm assuming that won't happen because unlike most pariah nations America is wealthy and powerful and true backbone is hard to find – the cowardice, equivocation, and bootlicking already being demonstrated by other world leaders is notable – but we've done the worst and we deserve the worst and I stand with any foreign leader who treats us the way we deserve to be treated. And yes, I am using "we" here. I mean, I could sit here all day and talk about how Trump isn't my president and that the United States is better than we're currently behaving, but all of that seems like empty and naive coping. It's the equivalent of slapping one of those "I bought this before Elon went crazy" stickers on your Tesla. Most of the people reading this are Americans and what America has done, particularly in the past year, demonstrates that we are a force of evil, brutality, and pain in the world. At present the death toll from this attack is at least 80 people, and those who have to buried their loved ones because of what America has done don't care that 48.3% of us voted for Kamala Harris. I'm ashamed of my country. I'm ashamed to be an American. I've never felt that way before. I've always had at least something to hold on to which kept me from going that far, but there's nothing now. If America ever did embody its stated ideals and values it stopped doing so a long time ago. We don't even bother to give them halfway convincing lip service anymore and our leaders don't even bother to build a superficial case for our aggressive and malicious adventurism anymore. America is an evil and dangerous nation that, if it stands for anything, stands as an example that only the world's tyrants and would-be tyrants should want to follow.

There are a lot of MLB players and prospects from Venezuela. Been texting with people in several front offices and nobody knows how this is going to impact players and their families’ ability to get out. A total clusterfuck.
