Visible here is a small portion of the large Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237), centered on its central cluster of stars; NGC 2244. This large round nebula lies some 5000 light years away and can be found in the constellation Monoceros near Orion. In optical wide field images the entire nebula appears strikingly similar to the petals of a red rose, hence the name. The image is constructed from exposures in three very narrow (3nm) wavelength bands corresponding to the emission profiles of ionised Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulphur to form the resulting detailed and brightly coloured scene. The combined images in each filter were assigned to their natural colour channels using a PixelMath expression in PixInsight. This enables a synthetic 'natural' colour image to be created from the narrowband data. Several striking shapes can be seen here, many of which resemble animals of various kinds. In particular the figure of a leaping Cheetah is very obvious near the centre. These dark shapes are denser clouds of dust and gas, slowly being eroded away by the intense ultraviolet radiation from the young stars in the central cluster. These stars have themselves condensed out of the nebula relatively recently. The brightest cluster members, HD 46223 and HD 46150, are massive O-type stars with stellar winds and radiation powerful enough to have cleared the nebula's central cavity around the cluster. A supernova explosion that happened in Centaurus A. This animation represents about 1.5 years of time, omitting the first frame which is a legacy image from 2010. This all happened a bit more than one month after the initial explosion. What you see here is the fading of the supernova, and then the blueish ring that is a light echo that began to propagate outwards immediately after the initial explosion. Upon closer inspection, a second, fainter light echo seems to appear following the first in the last two frames. Some processing notes: The telescope never oriented the same way twice when taking observations, resulting in diffraction spikes and the whole PSF of the foreground star being incredibly distracting. I stabilized this quite a bit by both using a stacked median version of the datasets to remove the spikes completely, and then added the 2010 spikes back on to all the frames. Red channel data were missing from the 3rd and 4th frames (second and third brightest images of the fading supernova) so color for that is both guessed and pulled from the 2010 data. I did use a fair amount of clarity and texture filtering from Camera Raw. Data from the following proposals were used to create this image: Star Formation in Nearby Galaxies Light Echoes and the Progenitor of SN 2016adj in Cen A Light Echoes and the Environments of SNe 2014J and 2016adj Red: WFC3/UVIS F814W Green: WFC3/UVIS F547M Blue: WFC3/UVIS F438W North is up.

While trying to write an article regarding the Hubble archive today, I revisited this object and decided to process it again. Previously I used NICMOS data for the infrared part, visible in orange as the slightly blurry-looking rings and arcs around the brighter central structure. The old version is here. I think the new version offers up a somewhat clearer vision of the infrared portion. NICMOS was always a bit difficult to work with because there were a lot of "features"—as they have been charitably called—to work out of the image. This version uses observations made by the newer WFC3/IR, and I am a lot more confident that every little faint detail you see here is indeed the nebula and not some instrumental wonkiness. I removed the diffraction spikes once again because they were very distracting and easy to confuse with the structure of the object. Data from following two proposals was used to create the image: Characterization of the WFC3 IR Grisms Hubble Heritage Observations of PNe with WFPC2 Orange: WFC3/IR F140W Green: WFPC2 F658N Blue: WFPC2 F656N North is up.

Sometimes things in the archive go unprocessed because they are, well, boring. There are probably at least a dozen of these elliptical galaxies sitting in there--good data and good images--but visually uninspiring. These are the most common types of galaxies, though. In this one it looks like there's still a small amount of star formation going on in the slightly bluer area on the left side. A great lecture I've found on not only elliptical galaxies but on all sorts of galaxies is here. Professor Crawford talks about colliding galaxies but there is a lot of information on the evolution of galaxies and how we arrive at big, old ellipticals. NASA image release June 6, 2010 Like a July 4 fireworks display a young, glittering collection of stars looks like an aerial burst. The cluster is surrounded by clouds of interstellar gas and dust - the raw material for new star formation. The nebula, located 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina, contains a central cluster of huge, hot stars, called NGC 3603. This environment is not as peaceful as it looks. Ultraviolet radiation and violent stellar winds have blown out an enormous cavity in the gas and dust enveloping the cluster, providing an unobstructed view of the cluster. Most of the stars in the cluster were born around the same time but differ in size, mass, temperature, and color. The course of a star's life is determined by its mass, so a cluster of a given age will contain stars in various stages of their lives, giving an opportunity for detailed analyses of stellar life cycles. NGC 3603 also contains some of the most massive stars known. These huge stars live fast and die young, burning through their hydrogen fuel quickly and ultimately ending their lives in supernova explosions. Star clusters like NGC 3603 provide important clues to understanding the origin of massive star formation in the early, distant universe. Astronomers also use massive clusters to study distant starbursts that occur when galaxies collide, igniting a flurry of star formation. With its helical appearance resembling a snail’s shell, this reflection nebula seems to spiral out from a luminous central star in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image. The star in the center, known as V1331 Cyg and located in the dark cloud LDN 981 — or, more commonly, Lynds 981 — had previously been defined as a T Tauri star. A T Tauri is a young star — or Young Stellar Object — that is starting to contract to become a main sequence star similar to the sun. What makes V1331Cyg special is the fact that we look almost exactly at one of its poles. Usually, the view of a young star is obscured by the dust from the circumstellar disc and the envelope that surround it. However, with V1331Cyg we are actually looking in the exact direction of a jet driven by the star that is clearing the dust and giving us this magnificent view. This view provides an almost undisturbed view of the star and its immediate surroundings allowing astronomers to study it in greater detail and look for features that might suggest the formation of a very low-mass object in the outer circumstellar disk.
