Times change; we change w/ them. Always a chin-up moment when your work is valued in your country of residence. Like wine, French language is an acquired taste for me though.

At an event in NY in 2023, Mamdani read from Umar Khalid’s letter. Khalid, a PhD student and scholar has been unlawfully jailed in India; it’s been over four years.

I just watched the trailer and am ready! Plus, a co-sign by the director of All We Imagine As Light, one of my favourite films last year, seals the deal ❤️
I so want to watch this film, Sabar Bonda (Marathi) (Cactus Pears). The director, Rohan P Kanawade, shot it in his mum’s village. In one of his interviews he mentions that the village landscape allowed for silence, stillness and openness. Queer romance sites are landscapes of openness!

Yes it’s a really good point. Thank you for formulating it, Jonathan. It seems that an uncritical celebration of Mamdani’s success will deflect our attention from several important issues such as anti-Black racism and the persistence of casteism in South Asian communities.
And Mamdani has a good way into addressing our collective anti-Blackness, with his familial history in Uganda. But course this is double-edged, some of his popularity it seems based around misunderstanding of the colonial role played by Asians against Ugandans. Can't win
One critical conversation I’ll be tracking during Zohran Mamdani’s term, in addition to his politics on Palestine, will be his implication in refusing enduring caste hierarchies and anti-Black racism in South Asian communities in NY (& across the world). He has yet to address these two points.

Odd that FR Bsky glossed over disruption of Isra*li Philharmonic Orchestra concert in Paris. The non-violent protestors were physically attacked by some spectators whilst others applauded.
The activists were detained!
The normalisation of violence against folks denouncing violence is disturbing.

"World's first potential trillionaire has killed 600,000 people, including 400,000 children" is the only headline that anyone should ever read about Elon Musk
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

No opinion about this specific claim, but I do think we need more humanities in our lives and hearts and minds. And more arts. More history, more literature, more painting, more moral philosophy, more poetry. More thinking about and cherishing what makes human life special.
I don’t know about you but I sincerely believe that Zohran Mamdani’s BA Major in Africana Studies enabled him to understand our current conjuncture & its demands of justice. Humanities shape minds & in his case for the better.

Save 50% on #NewBook "The Visual Afterlife of Abdelkader Bennahar" by Robert Desjarlais, which explores the life and death of an Algerian man who died on the outskirts of Paris in 1961, showing how French colonial state and police violence shaped the lives and deaths of Algerians. #Anthropology
