@markusoff.bsky.social Is anyone at CBC looking at the physical altercation involving the Conservative Candidate for Calgary Skyview? This was posted to Hafeez Malik’s Instagram but I haven’t seen any coverage of it.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

It would be helpful if more people understood renewable energy is actually an extremely disruptive technology and the reason monied interests are trying to make folks hate it is that they are the ones which will be disrupted.

“Those nasty Canadians are ripping us off and are controlled by Mexican cartels. They’re poisoning us with fentanyl and need to become the 51st state or they will pay a high price” is a belief that literally ZERO Americans had six weeks ago. It’s entirely invented from scratch.

Meta finally censored the ‘gram. Weird that it was implemented on Facebook ages ago but was only applied to Instagram after Canadians started taking a stand against American fascism. I guess I have to convince all my favourite COVID-conscious accounts to transfer here.

Your regular reminder that the US air & water pollution laws passed in the 60s & 70s -- and the elaborate federal bureaucracy created to administer them -- constitute one of the most successful gov't interventions in history. WILDLY successful. The envy of the world.

No one owes you "health".
Someone who is "unhealthy" based on things you perceive as "choices" are no less worthy of support.

Health is a privilege, mostly based on luck/chance.
It is not a moral superiority.

Danielle Smith should resign.
Now.

So should the entire United Corruption Party cabinet.

Allegedly, Smith's staff pressured health officials to approve over half a billion dollars in private health care contracts to a businessman who bought them seats in NHL luxury boxes in return for the favour. Then Smith fired a CEO who tried to investigate.

I contacted a university archive to see if they had a copy of a thesis from 2008 and they told me they recently destroyed all of their theses without digitizing them. So things are obviously going really well out there for libraries and archives right now. 😬

Canadians are still only worried about tariffs and not about white supremacy or fascism. It's maddening.

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously.

Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause."

They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.
NEW — OMB temporarily pauses all agency grants and loans programs.

Per copy of memo: "The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve."

Friends, I keep seeing "get a library card!" posts and while yes, that is helpful, it doesn't really mean much unless you *use* it. And just using it won't save programs, funding, or protect from bans. You have to get involved.
These are very good suggestions, but a few key ones are missing: attend library board mtgs and speak in favor (many are on zoom), donate $, and vote for measures and bonds to increase funding. Patrons have real power. Don't let a handful of bigots destroy your library.
One thing before tomorrow:

Use your local libraries.

Get your card.

Borrow books, manga, films, audios, ebooks.

Recommend titles for purchase (usually online).

Attend promoted activities.

Fill out those "How are we doing?" questionnaires.

Tell your kids that libraries are good.

They are.

I want people to stop posting vague advice like “build community”

A lot of people don’t know how to start. Post practical things like “here’s a list of mutual aid groups to connect with” or something

I am a climate scientist and this is correct ⬇️
Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

I know it’s obvious, but I think it’s still worth saying out loud:

Someone who wants to end fact checking wants to be able to lie to you without detection.

When lies are undetected, they start to shape our reality. We’re a lot more vulnerable when we can’t tell that a lie is a lie.
