On the topic of "unwritten grammar rules" - this was absolutely one of my favorite things about studying linguistics waaaaay back in the day. TLDR: we construct languages that are inherently suited to the way our brains work, and we have brains that are highly adapted to the way languages work.

Still thinking about a tumblr post I saw where someone was commenting on the fact that English adjectives HAVE to go in a certain order, or else you're doing it wrong, even though there is no grammar rule about that
