32yrs+ Developing for the British 8-bit SAM Coupé computer, doing what I can to keep this fantastic system alive with new hardware, software, repairs and 'SAM Revival' magazine!
(Also makes some peripherals for other systems.)
We did have an officially licensed 'Manic Miner' on the SAM Coupe, which came out in late 1991 and was expanded to feature 60 caverns.

[Since 2004 MM features on the cover disk with SAM Revival 9 with permission of the copyright holders/designers of the SAM version.]

Cool to see your VIC-20 game map there! I've often thought about porting some of my games to other platforms, with Money Bags being the ideal candidate for the VIC-20, as I'd also be able to get it to run via the cartridge interface I released to use VIC carts under emulation on SAM.

Amazing stuff, so much detail! How far did you get with the game?

I've only drawn one proper map on paper, before moving to designing solely on computer for the sequels. The deisgn sketch for 'Money Bags' which I coded for the SAM Coupe in 1996...

Looks like @flatduckrecords.co.uk is enjoying the Retro Computer Festival 2025 in Cambridge. How many attempts to get your high score? 😜 Gutted I wasn't able to attend this year.

the Centre for Computing History, Cambridge looks in detail at Sound on the SAM, with an audio CD exploring everything.

My SAA1099P Soundchip Interface, for RC2014 and compatible hardware, brings the SAM's soundchip to other Z80 based platforms. Will be fun to see what people can do with it!

Fun to see more SAA1099P soundchip tinkering by @flatduckrecords.co.uk, converting an example from the #SAMCoupe manual to the #ZXSpectrum.

Interfaces in use on his speccy:
- SAA1099P Interface for RC2014+compatibles
- ZX-RC Bus Interface

In October 2020 I released an adapter to use the 8580 SID Soundchip in place of the 6581 SID. Useful to use the other type of SID in your Commodore 64 'breadbin', or with my SID interfaces for Z80 systems (for SAM Coupe and RC2014). Info / Buy: 8580.samcoupe.com

(4/5) With the theme of this years Festival being #Gaming it would have been great to be there to talk about all my #GameDev on the SAM Coupe computer.

If you're curious to read about the SAM Coupe, perhaps try an issue of 'SAM Revival' magazine...

(3/5) I often try to launch new products at shows each year, at last years Festival I had some gold plated #SAMCoupe related PCB keyrings, this year I have launched new computer PCB badges and SAA1099P soundcard for #RC2014. They are available here - www.samcoupe.com/quickshop.htm

(2/5) for the last three years, showing everything I do for the fantastic #SAMCoupe computer for which I've been developing hardware, software and magazines for the last 32 years. (Plus hardware for the #ZXSpectrum and #RC2014 & compatibles too!)

(1/5) Unfortunately I was unable to commit to exhibit at the Centre for Computing History's Retro Computer Festival Next weekend. If you're going I hope you have a great time! I've been at the shows...

I've some more PCB Pin Badges available (SAM Coupe, Commie 64/16/VIC and new Rubber Keyed Speccy) available: www.samcoupe.com/quickshop.htm

They all help add a few extra quid to the development kitty towards the ongoing projects I've got underway for #SAMCoupe, #ZXSpectrum, #RC2014, #Retrocomputing

Found one of the cassette inlays that had a "programmers wanted" advert!

Finally took the plunge with machine code on the SAM Coupe in 1994 after buying an assembler for half price at a computer show. £14.95 well spent! Took to Z80 asm immediately and the rest is history!

Where I started... Recreation of the very early sort of stuff I did on the ZX Spectrum in 1983 with simple user defined graphics in BASIC... then some of the games I published for the SAM Coupe in the late 1990s ...

#8bit gene splicing! #C64 SID on #Z80! In 2003 I released an interface to use the #Commodore64 SID soundchip on the #SAMCoupe, in 2020 I released a similar interface for #RC2014 & compatibles (inc #ZXSpectrum via ZX-RC Bus Interface)

I was 8 when I was given a 48K ZX Spectrum and starting tinkering away straight away - I can still remember a lot of what I did in great detail. Annoyingly too, I've lost also all of of my graph paper doodles of speccy graphics, not sure where they went but again a few bits survive...

Can't beat those Computapes!

Some of the #Hardware I make for the #ZXSpectrum came about from suggestions and requests, such as the 2 way expansion connector to connect two peripherals to the edge connector. Also available: ZX-RC2014 Bus Adapter, Int.2 style Flash ROM Cartridge with 2 games, ROM Interface. 🌐 zx.samcoupe.com

focused too much on the ZX Spectrum emulation in the early years (we've now got emulators for many systems on the SAM Coupe!) neglecting the machine's true capabilities. I'll add my usual comparison photo to this post comparing ZX to SAM games!

While the SAM Coupe had Manic Miner we didn't have JSW, or JSW2 - my fav! ☹️ So I had to design, code and publish my own games in the same style! 😃 'Money Bags' spanned 3 games over the years. MB1 and 1 1/2 now feature with SAM Revival. Updated re-release of MB2 coming soon.

Work continues here on two solutions!
SAM in a CAN 2... original SAM motherboard recased in new aluminium case with a load of extra peripherals built in (some commission builds underway, 2 more will be available).
'Pandemonium'... new SAM system using the original custom chip which I tracked down.
