When CA launched Prop 50, it was polling at 38%. And so, we did it anyway. Winning campaigns requires that your GOALS define your actions, recognizing opinion - including who agrees to vote - is malleable. In other words, be a thermostat, not a thermometer.

Today we are taking politics out of Californian’s utility bills and putting an end to the use of ratepayer funds for the political and promotional benefit of IOUs. (1/2)

There's a bill on Gavin Newsom's desk right now that would stop monopoly utility companies from adding the costs of their lobbying and PR campaigns into customers' bills.

It's unclear if Newsome will sign the bill, despite 93% of voters agreeing with its premise.

About two-thirds of Los Angeles' 1.48 million households are rentals. Many have no A/C. But heat waves are getting longer and hotter.

I spoke with City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez about her proposal to enforce a "maximum indoor temperature" in the city: capitalandmain.com/a-c-saves-li...
A/C Saves Lives During Heat Waves. Will Los Angeles Require It for Rentals?
In the city's asphalt-covered lower-income communities, residents suffer more from heat illness. Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez discusses her plan to fix that.

Induction stoves are quieter, cooler, and produce less toxic pollution than gas. On the other hand, they also cook better, as a growing number of professional chefs recognize.

Manufacturers of beer, cheese, clothes, and thousands of other products rely on fossil fuel-burning boilers, which come with unhealthy consequences.

Replacing them with electric industrial heat pumps could deliver huge public health benefits and even save lives.
Heat pumps can help clean up factories — and save lives
Americans could save $1.1 trillion in public health costs by replacing thousands of industrial boilers that burn gas, oil, and other fuels nationwide.

We were talking about how the oil industry in California will never be its former self today. How production is just not coming back no matter what the regulatory climate. And I found this image from the OC register from back in 2014.

Says it all.

The oil industry made this mess. Now, they want permission to continue fleecing California taxpayers and consumers – and, as a bonus, slash regulations, cut corners, and endanger Californians. We can’t let Big Oil shake down California on their way out.

Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop!

Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels
"No Kings Day" protests turn out millions
Our unofficial estimate is that around 4 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.

I just like to post these data from time to time to puncture the mythological aura of mid 20th c protests. They were less popular than pretty much any 21st c mass action & people criticizing them used the same lines. Protest is about people coming together, shaping narratives, & building power.

In the last 20 or so minutes I’ve seen LAPD officers shove women to the ground without provocation, rip a sign out of a man’s hand and then swing a baton into his leg and raise a less-lethal launcher to aim
directly at a protester (which I’m 99% is a major policy violation.)

The opponents did not really show up in person. It just shows the fossil fuel industry stoked fear, but I guess not concerned enough to show up.
I am not at the SCAQMD board meeting, but the room is packed. I’m told that health and enviro activists far outnumber opponents of the 2 clean air rules being discussed.

Seen: Earthjustice, Sierra Club, Third Act SoCal, East Yard Comm. for Environmental Justice, CHIRLA, and more. Here’s a peak:
