Working to make our roads safer for cyclists. Safer roads for cyclists are safer roads for everyone.

My thoughts with everyone traumatised by this horrific crash and especially with the family and friends of the woman who has sadly died.

Yet another example of why we need a step change in action on Vision Zero, designing out systemic danger on roads as we do on rail.

I believe that children are the future etc.

They suggest actions that benefit all of us.

- Better neighbourhoods
- Improved public health
- Fewer road deaths
- More fun
Today sees the release of the Children’s Walking and Cycling Index report - the first of it’s kind - sponsored by Halfords

Children are often overlooked by decision-makers and officers in transport, or if they are considered, it's on the school journey.

“Road safety is a crisis that has gone on far too long. No road deaths are necessary or acceptable. Yet it is also much more than that. Safe and sustainable mobility can power a better future for us all.”

Reece McKinven reversed over an 83-year old great grandmother FOUR times, killing her.

He had no licence, no insurance, Cannabis in his system and a history of driving offences.

He received a 13 month sentence and a 2.5 year driving ban.

The system is not working.

If the roads cannot be made safe for cyclists then all efforts to encourage cycling will fail. Improving driver behaviour is central to this because infra cannot cover the entire roads network. Enforcing the law on driving around vulnerable road users is central to bringing about this change.

If you see cyclists riding "in the middle of the road!!" (usually actually the middle of the lane but sometimes the middle of the road if it's narrow) where there is on-street parking, this is probably why. They're managing both moving and stationary vehicles, either of which could easily kill them.
The danger of getting doored on a bike is that it throws you into traffic. Often, people on bikes are killed this way.

In this video, I swerved out of the way of the door but didn't have time to check behind me. I would have been under the Subaru if it hadn't driven into the oncoming lane.

No doubt just a warning letter from North Yorkshire Police for this close careless pass. Sends a clear message that this is a trivial offence despite risking people's lives.

On a bike, you’re not hidden behind metal and glass, you’re a part of the world around you. This visibility fosters human connection, whether through a nod, a glance, or just being seen. It’s a reminder of shared spaces and shared humanity.

Read The Telegraph or Daily Mail to find out.
I really do not understand the hatred towards cyclists & public transport. Its less traffic on the roads & competition for parking, kids can get themselves places, affordable option for nan & pop once they’re unable to drive, & transport for disabled people who don’t drive.

Close pass a cyclist in W Yorkshire like this Peugeot driver did and you’ll pay £100 for a course or receive 3 points and a fine. You could opt for a court appearance but it will likely cost you more points, money and time.
