Greetings, chordate comrades. #InverteFest is upon us.

tl;dr: Over the last 7 days every April, August, and December, we invite you to show the internet your coolest bugs & slugs.

Go find critters, post your art, write wikipedia pages, do whatever you like to celebrate invertebrates with us!

Day 2 of posting one invertebrate-themed magic card for #invertefest :
Today's card is Luminous Broodmoth. There's a theme among butterfly/caterpillar creatures - they often have transformative abilities, reflecting dramatic change that is insect metamorphosis.

This #invertefest I'm going to highlight one invertebrate-themed magic: the gathering card and share some fun facts.
Day 1: Scute Swarm! The iconic card that multiplies itself, mimicking an insect swarm.
I think my highest number of scutes in a game was ~20.

at some point we'll learn that magic made a fuckoff device in the basement or whatever, and that'll be the end of my time with it. maybe it's already happened. maybe we're all fools for thinking this can be avoided in the long run.

An (ecto)parasitic #Crustmas. This is Dolops (above), which swims around and attaches to fishes (below), but unlike its relative Argulus, which has suckers, it has hooks to hold on. Also, is bizarrely cute!

I think i need a moment to go scream in the woods, actually
Can't really go into detail at this stage because we are going to get it submitted at some point but i'm particularly troubled by the fact that the models tested actually didn't make up references in general, but directed the user to actual, existing "race science" papers 🫠

This is Jelly. She screams for ice cream. Has been at this for about 15 minutes with no luck though. 12/10 justice for Jelly (IG: jellythesamoyed)

Brb crying iver tiny baby gar <3
Have you ever seen a baby gar eating?

This little Spotted Gar is about a week old and has started feeding on zooplankton (in this case brine shrimp/Artemia/ aka "sea monkeys").

There are so many immensely talented paleoartists and scientific illustrators this cover could have been done by. Disgraceful for a journal to go with bad AI images instead.

I thoroughly approve of and encourage the bullying of genAI proponents, by the way.

This is my last and longest of three aurora threads, for the final substorm I saw from Columbus Ohio USA. It was by far the most brilliant and the strongest (at one point visible *south* of us)! It started ~11:30PM local time and lasted a full half-hour. Just unbelievably stunning!

Posts that made me google brachipod anatomy:
(My answer is ventral valve btw it's more shape)
bored: do you prefer the big spoon or little spoon
inspired: do you prefer the dorsal valve or ventral valve of a brachiopod

It is believed that all vertebrates descend from the larva of a filter feeder that stopped metamorphosing, staying in its mobile juvenile stage.
This is the basis for the incurable disease Retromorphosis Maligna, where ancient genes reactivate and transform the body into its "adult" sessile form.
