I’m a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). Minnesotan by birth, book nerd by choice. I also play Pathfinder 2 and other non-Hasbro TTRPGs, and I love video games. I’m married and have one son. Enneagram 9w8, INFJ
Superman review: 9/10! An incredible theatrical experience; go to IMAX if possible. Corenswet is the best Supes since Christopher Reeve. Humor, heart, and comic book gonzo action throughout. The sleeper hit here is Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific. He’s a great character who should get his own film.

Jurassic World: Rebirth review: 3 things I liked, 3 I didn’t.🧵
Like #1: The raft scene. Very close to a scene in the original book. Lots of tension, an agile and (fairly) realistic new T-Rex, and a brilliant “it was there a second ago!” moment. Felt like a scene from JP1 with solid setups & payoffs.

So I have not really enjoyed most of the Disney “live action” (read: Uncanny Valley CGI) remakes. But I saw the new trailer for Lilo and Stitch today… and that little girl is ADORABLE in ways that I had not expected. I think we might have found the first good one!

Well, turns out the Trump administration has grossly miscalculated the tariffs based on a fundamental math error in the formula they used, proving that no recession is serious enough for these idiots to learn how to multiply.

There is little as satisfying to me in the events of the Current Administration (tm) as watching Melon Husk light $20 million on fire to lose a WI Supreme Court race. Just a reminder: he isn’t a crazy super genius with limitless power and control. He’s a dumb apartheid fail son with daddy’s money.

Update on move: we are spending our first night in the new house tomorrow! The movers came and moved the furniture yesterday, but due to the blizzard we stayed two night with relatives. The old house has more that needs to be packed, cleaning, and minor projects before we list and sell this spring

Finally went to Captain America: Brave New World. Not for the first time, I wonder if the critics and I saw the same film. Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford are both brilliant. A tight plot, good thrills, and some deeper cuts in MCU lore that fans like me would enjoy. Go see it if you haven’t. 4/5

Oof, it’s been a minute. Lots to do with the move coming up and getting back into routine after the flu. But I just wanted to let y’all know that you’re awesome, and I hope you’re having a great day!

Even though I got my flu shot this year, my wife brought home influenza-A from her job at a dental clinic and got us both sick. Today is the fifth day I’ve been sick, and while my fever may have broken — hopefully — I feel weak and wobbly from days of fever and coughing. Stay safe out there, gang.

Hope everyone is happy with what they’ve accomplished. The end of the rule of law over grocery prices caused by… nothing a President can control. One day you can tell your kids that we broke the international order over bird flu.

Egg prices 2025: Growing bird flu outbreak causing shortages, higher prices

The Budde sermon, and Trump's reaction to it, distills nearly everything I've written about for the past decade. MAGA believes they define the only true version of Christianity in America. A Christianity that sees Trump as white Christian America's savior, and all other Christianities as dead.

Hey, #tolkien nerds and #tolkientok refugees. Has anyone tried Triller or Clapper as a TikTok alternative? I’m leaning toward Clapper but wanted to know if others had done any experimenting.

This is one of my friends and reliable follows from TikTok. He is worth a follow. Hoping the #tolkientok community can rebuild elsewhere now that TikTok appears to be dying.
The more society gets shaky the more I turn to high fantasy to find my way. Are there any books that are more relevant, helpful, or comforting than Tolkien's legendarium (or Wheel of Time for some of us) for difficult times? (Rhetorical Question)

Watch the movie, Shirley, on Netflix. It’s a biopic of the amazing Shirley Chisholm, a Black woman who fought against overwhelming discrimination and entrenched political power to run for President in 1972. Maybe not innovative filmmaking, but a life worth remembering today. Good movie! 3.5/5

Saw the Mufasa movie with family today. Visually impressive, if sometimes flat in a CG way. The first two acts were good enough, but the last act was just memberberries and endless contrivance to set up the original movie. Poor Scar got done dirty, too. His heel-turn is weak and unsupported. 2/5

As someone who was disappointed by the Snyder-verse version of Kal-El, I’m pretty excited for this movie! “Krypto… take me home.” I don’t know what to say, except that this feels like Superman to me. It’s about time.
