How to interpret the COP30 outcome?

Said this on the #BBCWorldService this morning. We all - scientists and public - know what the issue is, but the politicians waste time arguing over words.

A climate deal without explicit language calling for a fossil fuel phaseout is like a ceasefire without explicit language calling for a suspension of hostilities.

I know people are mocking this question but short haul flights like the ones between DC and NY are among the most carbon intensive and need to be eliminated. And the actual time difference btwn the two is negligible when you factor in security. I was surprised he flew.
Reporter to Mamdani (mocking): "Why did you fly here? Aren't trains greener?"

Mamdani (with tolerant smile): "I will use every form of transit, and I want to make sure they're affordable in NYC."

I don't know what's more extraordinary here: Mamdani's affirming "I am a Democratic Socialist" in the Oval Office (signaling that we have arrived!) or Trump saying that he doesn't mind being called a fascist. 🫠
Q: Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist?

MAMDANI: I've spoken about--

TRUMP: That's okay. You can just say yes. I don't mind.

We finally know the identities of the 9 anonymous authors of the May HHS report on pediatric gender-affirming care. Surprise! It's stacked with people who make money advocating against pediatric gender-affirming care.

Here's our writeup from May: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

So... not Al Gore, then. Hm.
Which translates to "al-Khwarizmi on Indian numerals".

Which means "algorithm" is just how his name was Latinized: al-Khwarizmi --> al-Gorithmi.

So every time you've ever said "feed the algorithm," you were secretly talking about a ravenous 8th century scholar who brought modern math to Europe.

when I was young, i used to wonder how people like this would fare in life, as they didn't seem suited for gainful employment. it turns out, the internet allowed them to accumulate a massive audience of similar idiots, enriching them and turning them into a presidential advisor

ChatGPT’s signature writing style is everywhere now, and I hate it. It reminds me of when we tried mixing all the beverages at the soda fountain in middle school. We didn’t actually create the perfect drink, we just made a cloying monstrosity that lost everything good about its constituent parts.

A new paper from great colleagues takes a careful look at techno-optimism — the belief that technology will largely solve climate change — and what it means for real-world climate action.

People are rising up and teaching each other how to resist and fight back, and it’s working.

And yeah, we’re seeing a whole lot of stupid ICE agents stumbling around like they own the place.

You cannot occupy a city and expect silence. The people who live there always answer back.

Many city halls are deep in budget-time. Some are pushing austerity ideologies, and are ignoring the difference between costs and cost-savers/value creators. Citizens, PAY ATTENTION, and never forget that the TRUTH about a city’s REAL aspirations isn’t found in its visions. It’s found in its budget.

How to Measure Climate Progress

Yes, it's about CO₂, CH₄, W/m², and every ±0.1°C.

But yes, moving off oil, coal, and gas is about improving economic competitiveness and human prosperity for decades to come.
