Today's migration stats illustrate the migration doom loop in action...

Had a revelation this week at work that one thing we're trying to do is very similar to the problem of determining someone's life expectancy.

And of course there's a Python ML library, scikit-survival, that's fully compatible with the scikit-learn pipeline we're using. I love the modern world.

Amazing that we manage to have school capacity problems despite a falling population. Probably the bad German habit of dividing kids early into different education tracks.

The Gesamtschulen seem to have the greatest capacity problem.

Aideen’s story has sparked an overwhelming response, showing the real impact that pavement parking has on people’s daily lives across the UK.

This is why we are campaigning to end pavement parking.

I am Ukrainian. I am very grateful for all the help and wish each and every one of our dear partners to receive exactly as much help with as much strings attached and at the same pace when their own lives and lives of their loved ones will depend on it.

Political sanity slowly starting to return to France. A few months after the governments promised to allow a vote on the budget (instead of forcing it through with the infamous article 49.3 of the constitution) the mainstream left is recognising the need for a formal deal with the macronists.

The small town German healthcare experience is the goddamn hospital saying "sorry if it's not an emergency we don't take new patients". So I have to shop around for small clinics with weird opening hours?

Authoritarian states facing popular backlash often move their capitals away from where people protest them: Yangon -> Naypyidaw, Cairo -> NAC, and now Tehran -> ???. Don't let the regime pretend it's about anything else - the ecological problems are always due to the regime's own mismanagement.

My partner was trying to check out DB jobs in my computer, and the website was outright refusing to show its German version? Kept reverting to the FR version, which doesn't show any jobs. She could work around it in the end but damn is it annoying when the computer thinks it knows better than you

It's not just OnlyFans, Parasociality as a Service is everywhere nowadays. I started watching a video which I thought was a travel show ("we're visiting the Northernmost train station in Germany!") but actually most of the run time was the couple unboxing presents and giving life updates.

The plan says that "A dialogue will be held between Russia and NATO, mediated by the United States." This implies that both Russia and the Trump administration don't see the US as part of NATO in any real sense. That should deeply alarm every other NATO state.

Transit Signal Priority is an umbrella term for multiple strategies that reduce delays for transit vehicles at signalized intersections, potentially down to zero.

Here, I'm comparing the trade-offs between a "French-style" and an "in-phase" TSP strategy, more common in North America.

If you survey residents of a rich neighbourhood, you'll find that they're not particularly rent burdened: they earn enough to cover the costs of living there. It's obvious why: if you're poorer it's not worth spending an outsized share of your income to live there.

I think it's well established that rail gets more public transport ridership than buses, controlling for speed and reliability.

This is explained by motion sickness being more common in buses than trams.

What bugs me: if you get motion sick in a bus don't you get also motion sick in a car?

It's actually brilliant how invisible transnational lives are to some environmentalists, like they will just refuse to acknowledge there is a greater problem here than "JUST STOP FLYING WHY DO YOU NEED TO GO ABROAD ANYWAY"

very funny to read these emails and then remember summers wondering whether the leaky pipeline in stem was because women are inherently bad at math
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

The German "competitively tendered" regional trains have failed me once again!

Today we wanted to take the 11:39 Dortmund-Paderborn, operated by the National Express. The train didn't show up and there was no information about it for at least 20 min and we gave up. It would turn out to be 1h late.

Exactly. It also frustrates me when you look at European iterations of this is how so many have conveniently forgotten how much what is now viewed as Far Right populist discourse was in its racism and misogyny deeply embedded in the normie 1950s-1990s centre-right parties

Must be because they all continue to Madrid and they want to get there before midnight.
