New Freeway Exit bonus episode just dropped. Me in conversation with @colinparent.bsky.social about his new report “Powerless Brokers: Why California can’t build transit.”

Have a listen!

BONUS: Abundance in transportation
California needs better public transit. But building new bus and rail lines is difficult and expensive here. A new report says to make things easier, the state needs to get out of its own way.

Bus operators in my city are unionized and the ones at the top of the experience scale will make around $80k before overtime* by the end of their contract.

Uber would prefer they lose pay, healthcare, and retirement, and drive their own depreciating equipment and beg every passenger for 5 stars.
Uber is trying to defund transit and put transit workers out of their job

It’s hard to imagine squandering a great transit investment any worse than UTC does.
I went one of San Diego’s least walkable neighborhoods to test how long it takes to get from one side of the street to the other — when there’s no crosswalk. Check out this video to see the results! www.instagram.com/reel/DH9Qc3h...

The fact that a plan that involves substantially increasing the volume of car traffic over the Cabrillo Bridge isn’t dismissed out of hand shows how deeply unserious park and city leadership are. Climate, transit, and walkability shouldn’t have to be reasserted for every single project.
While at #SDMOA today we also saw the Norman Foster exhibit that contains a model of the museum’s new west wing. I learned that the plan includes yet another parking facility in the center of #BalboaPark.

I know this sounds like an exaggeration, but roughly 100% of drivers are on their phone at every stoplight.

City traffic engineers will be SHOCKED to learn that green paint does not, in fact, protect cyclists from massive vehicles with poor visibility.

Terrific thread. When you need a car to get anywhere, that favors big retailers that can afford vast parking lots. The result is wealth getting sucked out of communities, as the money spent on both transportation and shopping overwhelmingly goes to the pockets of faraway corporations.
When a commercial space is both big and expensive, the tenants tend to be deep-pocketed corporations. So instead of an independent perfumer, you get Sephora. Instead of an brand selling niche workwear, you get J. Crew. This leads to homogenization in fashion (and culture).
