The original sin was failing to send Donald Trump to prison for the rest of his life for mounting a violent coup to overthrow the election of 2020.

I suppose I owe it to all of you who are new and absolutely appalled at my views on travel to let you know that I've been like this for a long time and have rules I expect you all to follow:

They don’t want the possibility of reversal. That’s the point. Collateral damage is just part of the accepted calculus.

The institutional Democratic Party is guided by an almost pathological level of conflict avoidance in almost every direction. “What can we do to make the least number of people mad?” is just a bankrupt way to operate.

Today was a grim, terrible day for the United States and the cause of democracy. Putin, along with other dictators around the world, can finally look at Trump with confidence and think: one of us.

Jim Acosta: I think the AP should consider whether or not to sue the administration… and the rest of the press corps should start seriously considering whether it’s worth sending everyone into the Oval Office, onto Air Force One, or into the briefing room.

As a journalist who covers extremism at the local level, I think it’s a mistake to view Trump’s Napoleonic statement as solely about presidential power. Consider if it’s interpreted as a wink and a nod for any extremist to act outside the law to “save” the country as they see fit

I’m so sick of people who say lighten up and stop taking what he says seriously. This man holds the most powerful office in the world, and what he says bespeaks the soul of a tyrant.

Just last week someone told me Trump would never shut down USAID because it buys so much US grain and I said, "I wonder if he knows that"
If only experts existed who could warn Americans repeatedly that foreign aid is money spent to pay Americans and buy things from Americans but no one's ever said it out loud so who can blame people for not understanding
U.S. businesses that sold goods and services to USAID are in limbo, including American farms dealing in rice, wheat and soybeans purchased as food aid.

Elon Musk is not a Federal employee or a political appointee. DOGE is not a real department. None of their activities are legal. This is a coup. The Republicans in Congress are willing participants in it. At what point do Democrats in DC get that and start acting like it? It’s not the price of eggs!

America (all of us) is about to go through some stuff. As someone who saw a lot of this coming, I’m frustrated and sad. My hope is that when the dust settles we will have a populous that is more engaged in the operation of their government. Perhaps this will be good in the long run.

I was one of those warning how bad it would be and how Trump 2 would be much worse than anyone complacently assumed.

But even I didn’t have ‘cancel all foreign aid, including to kids with HIV & malaria’ and also ‘let the world’s richest man get access to our private data’ on my 2025 bingo card.

This is a good point.
Franklin famously said that we have a republic “if we can keep it.” Americans have become complacent in keeping it. They have now in fact elected someone who has every intention to take it away.
I think Americans, blessed with relatively stable government for a long time, assume there is someone, some adult, who will step in and make things right before the President does anything REALLY bad.

There’s not.

Trump isn’t acting like someone who is worried about his party winning in two years or four. Might be a bad sign.

I just want to say for the record that when the history books are written centuries from now, I believe the election of Donald Trump in a free and fair election in 2024 will go down as one of the most senseless and self-destructive own goals in human history

Accountability is hard. So a 71 year old child who got caught with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar is begging for a pardon from a man he voted to convict of impeachable offenses.
Left is right. Up is down. Whatever as long as I don’t have to go to prison.
The difference between Menendez and the Dems who've gotten Trump pardons (Blago, Kilpatrick, etc) is that they didn't do anything to him personally. Menendez, when he thought he was politically safe (and needed Dems united behind him), voted to convict him twice. He may grovel and get nothing.
Some stunning remarks from Menendez outside court: “President Trump was right. This process is political, and it’s corrupted to the core. I hope President Trump cleans up the cesspool and restores the integrity to the system.”

How is this not the biggest scandal in America right now? Isn’t this unprecedented??
Maybe Dems in the Senate should take a break from voting to confirm Trump nominees & condemn the guy who said he wanted Pelosi ‘hanged’ on Jan 6th, & also condemn the guy who just released him from prison! Sheesh.
Trump gives top stormtrooper Stewart Rhodes a seat on stage at his speech, in case you thought he was done with January 6
