"There is also little doubt that my ‘Meccano’ set whetted my appetite many years later for constructing artificial molecular machinery from the bottom up." - Fraser Stoddart, the late Nobel laureate and nano technology pioneer who died recently aged 82.

We have lost two great human beings this week, Jimmy Carter and Fraser Stoddart. They each had tremendous impact on the world around them, Carter with his tireless effort to use his office to eliminate diseases, and to provide shelter for all, Fraser to make science a truly international enterprise

Such sad news about Fraser, what an incredible figure in world chemistry. I feel lucky to have known him, and those he raised and mentored who then influenced me: his daughter Ali and @stuartcantrill.bsky.social

When I first arrived in Evanston, I found a handwritten note under my hotel door. It was from Fraser, welcoming me to Northwestern and saying how he looked forward to meeting me. Warm, kind, loving, generous, caring and inspiring mentor. You will live in our 🤍 forever. Thank you for so much, Fraser!

I’ll miss gently berating him about how he could never organise files on his laptop and always had hundreds of files on his desktop. Fraser delivered my first chemistry lecture and the rest is history… I learned so much and owe him so much. RIP. chemistry.northwestern.edu/people/in-me...#Chemsky
