criticism is writing is art. as such, some of it will be lazy, uninformed, and ignorant. but then what of the countless excellent critics who create their own art by highlighting the work of others?
also: without critics, everything written about a new book, film, etc. is marketing.

Literally everyone deserves to go out for dinner, buy coffees, wear quality clothing and have fun experiences whilst also being able to afford rent, groceries, bills & have a little left over for savings no matter what job they do. Why is that so absurd to some people?

more equal societies are less free, from this perspective, because they lessen the specialness (& thus the freedom) of the rich individual. it's all about the potential freedom of the individual to rise above their peers, & never the society considered as a whole

i have learned that way too many americans see the concept of 'freedom' simply as the potential to be rich and privileged, even if they aren't, & not things like freedom from dying from a preventable illness if you're poor, or being imprisoned for minor crimes, or persecuted by the police, etc

Aw man no. What an icon, complex and charismatic. Gone too soon.
Sad news: Val Kilmer has died at 65. In the 1980s and 1990s--Top Secret, Heat, Tombstone, The Doors, really all the way through Kiss Kiss Bang Bang--he was so often an interesting and surprising studio leading man: An oddball with the face of a heartthrob. His best work is very worth revisiting.
