CA endemic bird Yellow billed magpies, very limited range. Gorgeous, vocal and intelligent Corvids. I hung out with about 20 of them in the oak studded wine country of Paso Robles a few days ago. Always a treat. Lots of interactions with Acorn woodpeckers also, each doing their own thing. 🪶🌿

It's getting tense watching the wills price hike approach whilst I still haven't had time to even collate a list of what I need! #GenHour

If you're in the vicinity of the British Library this winter, go visit their Secret #Maps exhibition, open until late January. It looks fascinating!

Other commitments have kept genealogy at arm's length recently, but the transcriptions continue. I did a happy lil wiggle when I realised I'd have to make another letter chart... I'm fine being odd, yes. #AncestryHour

Not been able to do much genealogy lately unfortunately, although I did complete a transcription project. Also, my computer is finally fixed! A shiny new C-drive and Windows install means some setup is required, but almost there :) #AncestryHour

Feeling pretty rough from a dentist visit today so couldn't face deciphering my 3x great-grandfather's army service record. I did however notice that he never rose from the rank of Private in nineteen years. #AncestryHour

Good evening #AncestryHour . I've been ruining my eyes with a document that is ever so slightly blurred, enough that my eyes are constantly trying to bring the words into focus. 😵 I'd take difficult handwriting over this any day.

Question two, just for fun: What are your favourite surnames from your tree? I have to hand it to Bliss, with special mention to Frost, Rose and Fox. #GenHour

Two questions for #GenHour, starting with the referencing. At @strathgenealogy.bsky.social I learned to write out all repeat references in full unless they immediately followed the same reference, in which case 'ibid' was permissible. What method do you prefer when writing citing the same source?

Since upgrading to #FamilyTreeMaker 2024, the software no longer recognises any British place name above county level - is anyone else experiencing this? Do you have any ideas as to why this has happened? I wonder if I've missed a checkbox somewhere...

I'm off to a talk soon, so I'll leave my question here: Does anyone know of a good book about 19th century British fashion? With a focus on images. Not detailed construction, just styles and how they changed over the century. #AncestryHour
