#GenHour - Question/Conundrum for US genealogists:

My great-aunt was born in NYC in 1921 so according to NYC, as a great-niece, I'm allowed to get her birth cert. However, since she died out-of-state (NJ), they need her OG death cert. AFAIK, I can't get her death cert b/c I'm not next-of-kin. Help?
November 20, 2025 at 8:32 PM
Hi #GenHour. This past week I ordered both of my maternal grandparents' death certificates (because I only have the photocopies of them) so I can then order their birth certificates once their death certificates come in!

How's your research coming along?
November 20, 2025 at 8:28 PM
Ok, #GenHour, I know this isn't exactly genealogy related but who here is going to watch (or is planning to watch) Ken Burns' "The American Revolution?" 🙋‍♀️

I know none my family didn't come over until more than 100 years after the Revolution but I'm still so excited about it! It's Ken Burns!

#GenHour - My research "Oops" from this week:

Background:
I'm trying to find my GGPs & mat GM in the 1920 US Census. Names-wise, based on Mom's non-meticulous research (but I found them in the doc), I found my GGPs parents & sibs in the 1920 census 2 pgs apart in the same apartment building ...

Hi #GenHour. My big thing from this week is that 1) I started doing genealogy research again & 2) I made a next steps list on my computer for each GP's line so I know what I need to do for each branch. Also had a research "Oops!" that I'll detail in my next tweet.

How's your research going?

Question for US genealogists: Which newspaper site do you use - Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank? (I will admit that while I've used both, I haven't checked either of them out lately before asking the question. Sorry.) How do you pick between the two?

I discovered this yesterday for my research #AncestryHour:

Bad news: I'm trying to get the birth certs for my mat. GPs, both died in not their birth state. Michigan says give us a copy of the death cert. NYC says give us the *original* death cert. Me: I don't have an original of either!

Hi #AncestryHour. So I got back into genealogy yesterday (yay!) and since I hadn't spent any time on it in a year (!) it took me a good half-hour to figure out where exactly I was with every branch I'm working on.

How's your research going?

One bit of research I told a good friend I would do for her (due date is January):

- Subject: Lucille Frank (wife of Leo Frank; Leo, I believe, was the only Jew to ever be lynched; he died in 1915 in Atlanta, Georgia if I remember correctly)
- Time period: Her whole life

Hi #GenHour! Sorry I haven’t been on in the past 2 months but it’s been a combination of the middle of the workday for me (it’s ~ 12:15 pm here) so I couldn’t get away or if I could, I wanted to catch up with GenHour first before diving back in (& then it became too many weeks to catch up on).

Hi #GenHour! So I have nothing to report genealogy-wise but I have good personal news! (And this is for #AncestryHour too.)

Two weeks ago as of tomorrow (Friday), I started a job! Unfortunately, this means that I likely won’t make it to #AncestryHour & (maybe) #GenHour for the foreseeable future.

Hi #AncestryHour. No news from me today.

I also want to let you know that while it's not 100% certain, I might be starting a job soon so this might be my last #genealogy chat (for both #AncestryHour and #GenHour) for a while.

Ok, #GenHour. I’m going through old photos, what photos would you consider tossing? I’m thinking of the following reasons but if you have any others, let me know:

Hi #GenHour. This past week my aunt & I started going through 1 of the boxes & labeling photos. There are a LOT of photos so it’s going to take a while. We barely made a dent/barely skimmed the top of one box in about 2 hours of working.

Hi #AncestryHour.

The good news is that this past Sunday my aunt & I started on the boxes - specifically labeling pictures - & there are a lot of pictures.

Quick #GenHour question: What kind of pencil do you use to write on the backs of photos? I feel like @photogenealogy.bsky.social told me once in a reply and I forgot what it was. Sorry!

Hi #GenHour. This is what I’ve been doing this past week. 👇

Hi #AncestryHour. I spent a bit of time this past week organizing some of the ~100+ docs abt my GF's BIL I got a few yrs ago from the USHMM. My in-house German translator has translated a handful of them but I didn't know for sure which he had translated & which he hadn't.

How's the research going?

Out of curiosity, #AncestryHour, what are fact categories that you have inputted into your genealogy program that your genealogy program didn't have initially?

This is for #GenHour.

If you want to read about a few things I’ve already found in the boxes, my blog is at:

Rebeccasatticancestry.blogspot.com

(To read only abt the boxes, click on the tag “what is in the box.” However, you could just read the whole blog bc I don’t have many blog posts.)

1. I'm horrified.
2. After I read this, this article reminded me of my grandfather's brother-in-law who was taken off the streets of Vienna in May 1938 with nothing but the clothes on his back for the crime of being Jewish & was sent to Dachau (& later Buchenwald).

This is the 1930s all over again.

Hi #AncestryHour. I haven't done any genealogy research this week b/c of job searching.

In good news though, I'm hoping to go through the boxes w/ my aunt either at the end of this week or sometime next week so hopefully I'll have news for you on that front either next week or the week afterwards.

#AncestryHour

For those of you who have the AncestryHour tab (feed?) up on the top as one of your feeds, when you click the AncestryHour tab does it say:

"Your feed is empty! You may need to follow more users or tune your language settings."

B/c that's mine. Does anyone else have this problem?
