Beattie, who has a PhD in political theory from Duke University, where he also taught, was fired in 2018 after attending a conference with white nationalists. He was appointed by Trump in 2020 to a the Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad, a move that the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, called “outrageous” at the time. (_Greenblatt declined to comment Sunday._) The commission works with other governments to preserve sites related to World War II and the Holocaust.

A friend pointed out a couple weeks ago that Bill Clinton, George W Bush, and Trump were all born in 1946 and I keep thinking about how it feels like our political imaginations are being held hostage, with occasional outliers, by a very particular generational precept of the nation.

Jack Smith was my law school classmate. I did not know him during school.

To me, he is an American hero. He did everything in his power to bring Donald Trump to justice.

There are many people to blame for the failed prosecutions. He is not one of them.
