It’s so surreal seeing prominent right-wing figures—an influential presidential advisor, the last campaign’s biggest donor, etc.—call for violence, the GOP president lie and stoke violence, every Dem officeholder condemn it, and mainstream media treat those as the same, or the Dem reaction as worse.
These are calls for mass political violence, against all Democrats. They openly call for the bombing of "Democrat" cities and for the jailing or killing of Democratic politicians. They are from some of the most influential voices in right-wing politics. Will anyone say anything?

@garrettepps.bsky.social has been a friend and colleague for decades.

An enjoyable (for me) podcast with him this week, for @washingtonmonthly.com , about life in DC these days. Audio and transcript here:

all of this is gross but sergei brin, who came here as a refugee through hias, sucking up to the guy who killed our asylum program and inspired the “hias refugee shabbat” shooting at the tree of life synagogue is the one that really hits the gag reflex.
Incredible clip of tech CEOs fawning over Donald Trump. Someone store this clip in the underground archive vault

People keep asking "what do you expect Democrats to do???"

I expect Schumer and Jeffries to hold a press conference and say: "Donald Trump is conspiring with his personal attorneys he corruptly installed at DOJ to cover up his close friendship and possible horrific crimes with Jeff Epstein." /1

Tedious to point this out, but:

- When a tongue-tied Biden said "President of Mexico" instead of "Prez of Egypt," it was a several day story.

-Hours after Trump says whoever appointed J Powell made a big mistake (it was him), the episode appears not to merit a story on any national-media sites.

When scholars of authoritarianism and fascism leave U.S. universities because of the deteriorating political situation here, we should really worry.

Obama and Biden may think they are honoring the office of the presidency by keeping quiet at a moment like this — if so that’s just preening vanity — they owe it to the office and to the Republic that until last month it served to speak up loudly and clearly and without relent.

The most heartbreaking and avoidable push notification.

A child has died from measles - which the antivax movement wants you to believe is a routine childhood disease. Their grifting profiteers have sold new parents fear and lies, and their deceitful, repugnant leader sits at the head of HHS.

So, they are
- illegally dismantling US govt, disabling Congress
- burning our alliances, turning US into global pariah
- reigniting inflation, exploding the deficit, unraveling US public health system
- putting backdoors into Treasury
This feels more like an attack on the US than a new government.

This is the moment where you should realize that the Constitution is being collapsed by Musk and Trump. The ABA doesn’t do stuff like this, it’s fundamentally conservative in nature. It’s releasing this statement because if things much further, “law” and “courts” will be useless.

People who are scholars of European history, as I am not, point out parallels to 1930s rise of fascism there.

I have spent more time learning about China. Which is why I keep thinking about parallels to Cultural Revolution nihilism. (Article Jeremy Mayer)

Compared with any other major country, the United States has been extremely fortunate in its two immediate neighbors, Canada and Mexico.

Now, incredibly, it is declaring economic war on both of them. This is a war no one can win, and from which tens of millions will lose.

This is insanity.

Having watched with growing alarm the developments of the last 24 and 36 hours in Washington, I thought I’d take a stab at how the US media would cover this story if it was happening in a foreign country. Here’s that story that should be written this weekend: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-s-jun...

Imagining how we'd cover overseas what's happening to the U.S. right now

The Citizens United ruling 15 years ago today has ushered in an oligarchy with the world’s richest man calling the shots.

Yesterday, Trump was flanked by billionaire backers flaunting their influence.

Don’t listen to what Trump says—look at what he does.
It’s been 15 years and the disastrous effects of the Citizens United decision are clear as day.

Look no further than the incoming Trump administration, which is full of billionaires who paid for a seat at the table. #EndCitizensUnited
The combined net worth of Trump's small circle of inauguration attendees yesterday is over $1 trillion.

Remember that when Trump said "I am your voice," this is who he was talking to.

Democrats need to be out making a full-court press telling voters that Donald Trump lied to them, and demonstrating every day what he's doing to make Project 2025 a reality.

Trump ran as far from the brand of Project 2025 as possible. Democrats should force him to own it.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is not a “skeptic” of vaccines. He has said there are no safe or effective vaccines. He is a foe of vaccines.
