Interesting to learn the guy who runs CC is both a massive liar and a total dipshit
NEW: Common Crawl, the massive archiver of the web, has gotten cozy with AI companies and is providing paywalled articles for training data. They’re also lying to publishers who have asked for material to be removed. “The robots are people too,” CC’s exec director told us when we asked about this.
The Nonprofit Feeding the Entire Internet to AI Companies
Common Crawl claims to provide a public benefit, but it lies to publishers about its activities.

I don't read EZ so I have no opinion of his work, but I'm confused by some of the defences I'm seeing. The sources for the Wired piece are bad, true. But doing PR and journalism in the same industry is a textbook conflict of interest, no? Doing both of those jobs at all is at least a little sketchy
i deeply love WIRED and their reporting, but that ed zitron piece was one of the most bad faith, head scratchingly bizarre pieces i’ve ever read

I don't care how many tattoos Platner gets, I'm seeing multiple non-US-based posters making fun of this doofus. I'm no campaign strategist, but "our guy is an international joke" seems like past time to fold

OpenAI is huge in India. Its models are steeped in caste bias.
India is OpenAI’s second-largest market, but ChatGPT and Sora reproduce caste stereotypes that harm millions of people.

One reason that the LLMs write like they do is that pre-GPT we filled up the internet with that kind of bland writing, and we did that partly because Google told people that clean, plentiful, SEO-optimised copy would improve rankings and because content meant traffic meant ad views

That the Harris/Walz campaign made a huge deal out of Walz being a football coach—tackle football being a clear, well-documented threat to the health of young players—tells you all you need to know really
I know the point of being a boiled frog is that you don't know you're being boiled, but major Democrats seem so oblivious that got into the hot water by conceding trans kids as a central culture war activity.

This kind of scabware needs to be high on the agenda of all TA unions (faculty unions should be thinking twice about opening this door too, obviously) engaged in bargaining
Senior white male AI researcher "designs" a computer program to simulate a young Black woman. That will answer student's questions and debate with students (all TA roles) but won't be a TA. Right.

As stories of mental health crises and suicides continue to pile up, it needs to be said more vehemently than I said below: there is zero reason chatbots need to present as human. This should be treated as fraud AT BEST. The people who chose to design the software this way should be held liable
I feel like the obvious conclusion here is that there's a fundamental design & conception problem with creating a genAI textual interface that responds as if it's an individual. Even when explaining how the software is misleading, repeatedly saying "I" is yet another obfuscation...

Not an original thought, but the vicious attacks on higher ed underway in deep blue states like Oregon and Connecticut demonstrate that the anti-intellectualism coursing through American life cannot be localized within one political party or political tradition. 🗃️
