So-called “soft skills” include knowing how to ask a question, figure out how to answer it, gather the appropriate sources, analyze the information and decide on a viable answer and plan, almost always in collaboration with others. This is the heart of a liberal arts education, whatever your major.
"Learn to code" was always bad advice, unless you actually like to code. College students have the best chance of professional success if they major in topics that interest them. Today in @startribune.com. Please tell high school students and parents.

Opinion: College students, go ahead and major in what you love
"The lesson here is simple: Major in what you love, not what you think will get you a job," David M. Perry writes.

A brilliant account of just a few things scientific research has accomplished through federal funding to make all our lives better! @standupforscience.bsky.social
🧵ICYMI: Trump is going after the National Science Foundation (NSF) budget, slashing it by $5.1 billion—about 57%. This is the largest single-year cut in the agency’s history and would affect nearly every aspect of NSF’s operations, from research grants to education & workforce development programs.

Stand up for science. We are facing extreme challenges and we must respond.
🚨 URGENT RESPONSE CALL 🚨

Trump’s Fool’s Gold Science EO is a dangerous sham.
It gives his appointees the power to dismiss entire bodies of research and punish researchers who fail to fall in line with his agenda.

Books speak to our individual and collective humanity. When we ban books we ban our true selves.
I don’t remember ever not being able to read. Books have always been part of my identity.

And somehow, that moment when I find a book that I know is just meant for me, continues to be astonishing every damn time.

As always, the amazing work of women remains invisible. The efforts of so many women workers from riveters to code breakers that helped win the war was written out of history.
Julia Parsons, a U.S. Navy code breaker during World War II who was among the last survivors of a top-secret team of women that unscrambled messages to and from German U-boats, has died at 104.

Soon after her officer training in Washington, she was recruited to a classified code-breaking team. She kept her work secret for decades, even from her family.

The academic publishing system is broken. Academics provide the free content and labor to review and are dependent on this for tenure and promotion while private companies make the money! We have the power to change the system by changing criteria for hiring, tenure and promotion. #AcademicSky.
I have a coauthored paper under review for 9 months. Coauthor is on tenure track. No way to get a hold of the editors. If we do not manage our expectations on tenure review committees, we will lose talent. It's not their fault! #EconSky #AcademicSky
