Games hit harder when choices matter. Not just “good or evil,” but why someone does it and what it costs. A burned bridge, a lost ally, or the town that remembers what you did. Consequences give weight to dice rolls.

Coyote & Crow is a sci-fi fantasy RPG developed by First Nations devs, where colonization of the Americas never happened and indigenous peoples advanced into high-tech societies. Players explore a world of tradition, innovation, and destiny shaped by their communities. #ttrpg #FirstNations

Been playing with chronomancy and time travel in my current game, and it’s wild how it changes everything. NPCs can lie across time, prophecies turn into puzzles, and choices echo backward as much as forward.

Tharizdun is the big bad of my current game, so I'm revisiting The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. Strange relics, old powers, forgotten lore. It quietly sets the stage for darker stuff like the Temple of Tharizdun. You feel the shadow before you meet it. Lots of worldbuilding.

Running a Halloween one shot in a few hours.

Halloween RPG ideas:
• A village traps ghosts in pumpkins to keep the dead quiet
• A masked festival where one mask belongs to something not human
• A house that grows new rooms every night, each one stranger than the last
Spooky works best when things feel almost normal…almost.

Going back to the original Ravenloft module. Still one of the best adventures ever written. Tight location, smart clues, real tension, and Strahd feels like a character not just a stat block. Gothic dread done right.

DungeonDraft

DungeonDraft has become one of my go-to tools for map making. It’s fast, clean, and doesn’t feel like “software gets in the way.” You can knock out a whole dungeon in one sitting without fighting menus. Great for homebrew prep.

Online DM Tools
There are so many great DM tools online now. Things like Donjon for quick generators, Kobold Fight Club for encounters, Owlbear Rodeo for quick maps, Kanka for worldbuilding, and Fantasy Name Generator for NPCs on the fly. Prep has never been easier.

I’m reading the playtest rules for Ruttigers RPG and it’s shaping up to be something special. It keeps that clean OSR backbone but layers in a mythic tone that feels fresh. The art? Gritty storybook vibes that pull you right in.

Of the most recent games I have read, this one really made me consider the rules lite aproach.Tombpunk is a rules-lite grimdark fantasy game built for fast play and bleak stories. Character creation takes minutes and the tone leans hard into ruin, rot, and desperate survival.

Or maybe NSR is more your speed:

• Cairn
• Into the Odd
• Electric Bastionland
• Troika
• Tombpunk
• Knave

Same spirit of play, just looser rules and faster table time.

Looking to start with OSR?
Some of the most popular OSR games right now:
• OSE (Old School Essentials)
• Basic Fantasy
• Dungeon Crawl Classics
• Lamentations of the Flame Princess
• Labyrinth Lord
• Swords & Wizardry

These keep classic structure and old school feel.

OSR vs NSR comes up from time to time, and honestly I see them as cousins. OSR leans into classic play: rulings over rules, exploration, danger, and player skill. NSR keeps that energy but strips things down even more and goes rules-lite.
Both chase the same feeling

One of the best lessons from Elden Ring is how mystery drives exploration. You don’t get a lore dump , you get a hint, a ruin, a symbol, a rumor. The table fills the gaps with curiosity. Players move because they wonder, not because they were told to.

Elden Ring bosses work so well because they aren’t just “a big enemy.” They’re fallen legends with history. When players learn who they were before the fight, the battle hits harder. Tragedy makes the monster memorable.

If you want Elden Ring style in your campaign, try these hooks:

• A ruined city that still worships a dead god
• A knight cursed to wander until someone remembers his name
• A relic that grants power but erases pieces of the bearer’s past

That tone goes a long way.

Elden Ring is a goldmine for TTRPG ideas. Mysterious ruins, fallen kingdoms, tragic demigods, and strange magic that feels more like myth than spells. The world tells its story through hints, not speeches, which is perfect for tabletop play.

The Evils of Illmire is a great example of how to do a small sandbox right. It drops the players into a troubled town and lets them uncover what’s wrong at their own pace instead of pushing them down a railroad.

The Mystara Gazetteers were something special. Each book took a nation from the Known World and made it breathe, maps, politics, history, culture, even holidays. They turned the setting from a backdrop into a living world. #DnD #Mystara #OSR #RPG
